Rip off knife

Did any of you boys ever buy a ripoff knife? A while back I was walking through a truck stop over near Gallup, NM. Headed to the mens room.
On the way I saw a case of knives. When I came out I told the clerk I wanted to see this one knife.
Lots of you most likely have Ken Onion knives , mostly made by Kershaw.
One of his most popular is the Leek. This knife looked like a bigger Leek.
I of course bought it. The only writing I can find on it is 440 and ROC.
I take that to be 440 steel and the republic of China, Taiwan.
It's well built, screwed together just like the original.
The main difference is the teak looking scale on one side and the lack of scale on the clip side.
Here it is with a real Leek and a Blur.

Take a Rolex for example. I bet there are 10 times the amount of fake Chinese Rolex's compared to the real one's out there.

ROC is Republic of China, Taiwan, not the Chinese People's Republic on the mainland. I don't know how good their products are. That said, I have a couple of Chinese knives and one Pakistani; they're pretty good, in fact they're very good for the price.

I'm sorry to say it but I've literally got a suit case full of rip-off/junk/novelty knives. Most of them are made in china and/or made of cheap quality steel. All from different Flea Markets when I was younger and on a knife collecting kick.

The Leek is a great knife..........but..........I always wished it was just one full click bigger.

I like the size of that copy....

I've never bought one of the knockoffs, but I've been given several by non-knife-owning friends. One was good-looking and quite decently put together; but like most of them, steel and heat treatment were a lot less than great. Touch-up after one slice of Velveeta.

It looks well finished from the picture. I own several Kershaw / Onion knives, and they are nice. On that one, I would question the temper and quality of the steel used in the blade, pivot, and assisted opening spring, as well as the fit of the lock. Might turn out to be quite decent.

I get a kick out of watching "Knife Collectors Corner" on late night TV. They offer a dealers collection of say 200 assorted knives and swords for what works out to be under a dollar a knife. I cant imagine what the quality of these knives must be...

I have a knock-off of a Cold Steel Tanto. It was 25 bucks, and I'm willing to bet that it'd work for its intended purpose just fine. I also have a knock-off of a CRKT folder, it was 12 dollars, I've carried it for 8 years, and it's still tight and cuts stuff.

Like most of us, I've got a box full of knives, some nice, some not so nice.

I've got me oneof them Rorex watches.....found it. Won't keep accurate time but it does look real, if thats what ya want.....

I've bought plenty of cheap knives, mebbe 1 or 2 were worth what I paid for them.

I suspect the number of fakes to real Rolex would no less than 100,000 to 1.

If it has the "speed safe" opening feature and you didn't pay to much for it...it looks nice. I thought I lost a $50.00 Leek, was upset about it, ordered another and some other models for Christmas, then found the lost one the other day.
If you want a little bigger Leek, check out Kershaw model #1970 and model #3650. Both have "speed- safe" opening, drop point blades and just a bit larger than the Leek. I have all three and really like them all. I hardly carry the Leek anymore the 1970 and 3650 usually go out the door with me.

And the Blur is made right here in the good old U S of A.

Between 1989 and 1994, I had an assignment at work that required twice monthly travel to Mexico City. While I stayed at the Hotel Maria Isabel, across the way, in the Zona Rosa, was an outdoor mercado, and you could get "Rolex", "Vacheron", "Patek Philippe", "Omega", and a host of other knockoffs. They also had a variety of "Polo", and other popular brands, that bore almost no semblance to the real thing.

Hmmm, both nice knives, as are Kershaw products generally. But neither would replace the Leek for me. I'm sure I would like them, especially at the price, about half the price of a Leek. But the Leek has some qualities (design, materials, feel) that distinguish it from the knives you mention, and from most other knives.

A friend with a background in product design saw my Leek and commented "That is a really expensive knife." The Leek is the only knife I own that has drawn a comment anything like that; not bad for a knife I would call only moderately expensive.

I have seen knock-offs, but only in bubble pack, so I couldn't handle them. I don't know if I could spot one at a distance.
