RIP Pat Summerall

I just read where Pat Summerall died at the age of 82. I knew Pat from the many times he flew in and out of Jacksonville (he lived in Lake City, Florida). I once asked him about being teamed by CBS with Madden instead of his former partner. He told me his former partner, whose name I can't remember, was "Native American and lived up to the stereotype of Native Americans and alcohol" and Pat said he tried to keep up with him. He said working with Madden was crazy but probably added some years to his life. Rest In Peace, Pat.

Summerall's first broadcast partner was Tom Brookshier, but I hadn't heard anything about alcohol or NA ancestry. I do recall he got in some hot water once for observing that some college football team "had a collective IQ about 40."

ADDED: I just looked up Brookshier and found he died a year or so back from cancer.

The 1958 game against Cleveland won by the Giants due to Pat's kick which allowed them to play the Browns again was considered one of his finest moments. Summerall kicked a 49 yarder to win the game and put them in a one game playoff with Cleveland which they won for the right to face Baltimore. Pat once said he still had that goalpost from the Browns game in his backyard in Lake City. I never found out when Pat moved to Dallas if he took his goalpost with him. Oh, his real name was George Allen Summerall. He got the nickname Pat because, as a kicker, his name often showed up in the sports page notated PAT Summerall indicating Summerall had kicked a Point After Touchdown or a PAT. The name stuck.

An article in the Dallas Morning News said he grew up with his aunt, uncle, and a cousin named Mike. Because so many Irish jokes used the names Pat and Mike, his aunt and uncle started calling him Pat, and it stuck.

He was a classy guy. He seemed to be extremely kind.

One of the great ones. He managed to combine understatement and dramatic impact, which sounds impossible. Very economical with his words, unlike some of today's motor-mouths. Naming no names, but can you say "Gruden"? I thought you could...
