RIP Roscoe P. Coltraine

I surely hate to hear this. He was one of a kind. I remember the first time I saw him was in an incredibly chintzy horror film called The Killer Shrews back in the late fifties. This film was so-o-o bad...the giant "killer shrews" were some dogs with crepe hair glued on them.

What I really liked about James Best is that he never completely hid his Southern accent, and I'm not sure he really tried. He was really good in a couple of Twilight Zone episodes, too...The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank and Jess-Belle.

He lived right up the road in Hickory, North Carolina...he never really strayed far from his Southern roots. He was never really a Hollywood type guy.

Actor James Best has died at age 88. Sheriff Roscoe was one of his better known roles but he was a fixture in westerns on TV back in the 1950's and 60's.

CW

You just beat me to it.He was alsoin the Army and was in the MPs stationed in Germany just after the war.

I just saw him on an old Andy Griffith episode a couple of weeks ago. He was also cast as a bit actor in a lot of the old TV westerns of the 60s. Good actor. RIP Roscoe.

Seems as though all those good old actors and actresses have passed on. My wife and I met Denver Pyle (Uncle Jesse) and his wife in Cody, WY back in 1994. He was a very friendly guy. He died a year or so later. I'm amazed at the variety of roles that guy played in his film and TV career.

He was in several Andy griffith Show episodes-as a guitar strumming fellow. I think i even saw him in an episode of COMBAT?? Ive seen him in numerous old westerns and war movies and TV shows. Some notables include: Winchester seventy three, Shenandoah, etc.

Let's not forget what he did to poor Billie Joe in the movie "Ode to Billy Joe".

Just kidding! He was a great actor and a quite interesting man. He'll be missed.

What was the spinoff of DOH? I remember a radio discussion between Roscoe and Deputy Enos:

"This is Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltraine. Forget about it Enos!"
"This is Enos, fergittin' it."

It was called Enos. I think it lasted about a month?

He deserved a lot better than working in "The Dukes Of Hazzard" (and so did Denver Pyle); but I imagine, and hope, that it made him some really nice money.

Seems to have been a good man who worked steadily and honestly.

Dukes of Hazzard....

'Dukes of Hazzard' was horrible but I guess it paid the bills. Everything else he did, big or small since 1950 was way beyond that. His wife Dorothy was a nice looking gal that played some parts, including in the 'Dukes of Hazzard' and produced "Return of the Kill Shrews" in 2012.

He also spent a lot of his time teaching his craft to others. Commendable.
