Does anyone watch this Discovery Channel show?

I've seen it once, when he caught a big sturgeon that some thought may be the cause of some fishermen disappearing when one overturns their boats on a big Alaskan lake.

Wish that I'd seen the episode where he caught a big tiger fish.

Is the show usually very good? What other "monsters" has he caught?

It has its ups and downs, but it's usually pretty interesting.

My favorite show was the one in India where something was eating kids in a river. Turned out it was huge gooch catfish which had gotten used to eating partially burned human remains from Hindu cremations.

The shows in Brazil about the arapaima and piranha were good too.

It's like "Monster Quest" where they actually find a monster and catch it.

I'd vote for the Giant Mekong River catfish.

After the Viet Nam situation, catfish 10 feet long and over 600 pounds were caught. Saw a news photo of 6 at once.

Now the the Mekong has dams and is one of the worst poluuted rivers in the world........

They may be soon extinct.

I just had a friend tell me about it the other day. I'm going to tape it this Thursday, put my wadders on and have a few cold beers to watch it.

I watch it sometimes. He did a show on the Snakeheads I mentioned in another thread.Their not huge but they are monsters.
It's one of the better shows on Discovery.Usually interesting, but I like anything to do with fishing and travel.

Can you post the scientific name for those "snakeheads"? I'd like to find out what they are.

Thanks,

I really enjoy this program. This main guy is 10 men so often that it means little to him. He'll stay up all night eyeballing that rod tip, will dive in if he thinks that's the only way NOT to lose his fish, gets on well with whatever natives he encounters while seeking these monsters. He knows fishing inside and out, but keeps his terminology simple enough for the non angler to follow him along. He's very careful with his catch, not just or his own safety, but for the safety of the fish, which he typically releases, as well. He is a modern day Theodore Roosevelt, researching his way through various nowheres in search o the next "monster." And, likely catching it, too.

I like the show, but to me "catch and release" is an UTTERLY alien concept. I REALLY like fish... to EAT!

I hear "catch and release" and it reminds of the Irish standup comic who had a co-worker ask him, "How many beers will you be having tonight?"

His reply was, "I don't understand the question!!!"

I think the "catch and release" is PC garbage required to present the show on Discovery. (And in UK offerings, especially)

He also seldom shows a knife, although I think he has a Gerber Harsey Air Ranger model in his pocket. That may also be PC stuff.

He did a great piece on catfish in a Spanish river, the Erdu?. Hydro had changed river temos and an non native species was put in and has now almost taken over the river. Impartial and informative.

Well, beer IS kind of a "catch and release" type of beverage.

I did catch his show about the sturgeon, and even though he caught one, I've caught one bigger.

Sturgeon on the Willamette River, OR caught on May 21, 2010.
9.5 feet long
~400lbs
~100 yrs old

I enjoy Jeremy Wade, he is a biologist and die hard fisherman who has written a book: RIVER MONSTERS, True Stories of the Ones that Didn't Get Away. The exotic locations and the people that guide him to his quarry are all very interisting. What I really notice is his use of artificial lures and and his reluctance to use live bait at times. His PC catch and release methods are expexted considering he is on the Animal Planet television show.
I personally use live bait all of the time and practice "fillet and release". ;)

Was the sturgeon a dangerous "Man Eater"?!
Sorry, I love fishing, but like most reality type shows River Monsters has a little bit too much theatrics for me!
