You know, I've never gone on a road trip for a gun.

Now with that said, I've been on a lot of road trips to go hunting. I've often driven over 2,000 miles on such trips and sometimes I'll come home with a new gun from such adventures.

Never drove very far for a gun, but a little over 4 years ago, we drove 160 miles from Phoenix to Benson AZ, where we met our daughter who traveled there from Las Cruces NM. She handed off a little stray puppy to us whose picture we had fallen in love with.

Today she is known as "Booger" and she's a shining light in our lives.

Eons ago we knew about a huge gun shop and outdoor range way out in the sticks. You could pick up a gun from a rack, and on the way out the front door buy a box of ammo and give him your driver's licence and you could shoot on the back range to see if you wanted to buy it or not. That was pre-NICS.

It was a 160 mile round trip. I went twice and bought a gun each time. The 3rd time I went he was out of business. Never could find any info on the internet as to why or when he closed.

166.6 miles one way in search of the very illusive 41 magnum lever action. the other two were icing on the cake. Marlin Cowboy in 45 LC with 24" octagon barrel. last but not least, Marlin 39M for Mounty, or so i'm told, takedown model. none of these are common around my neck of the woods.

i count myself fortunate to have found any of these rifles but all 3 at once. i must have done something right.

thanks again, krs/kenny :D

I once drove to Austin from my home in Stephenville, a distance of about 170 miles one way, to buy a nice condition double date Luger from a forum member. It was worth the trip!

Of course, by reason of sheer size, willingness to drive in Texas may be on a scale that seems odd to residents of other states where things are closer together! :-)

In the very late 1990s I drove to a gun show in Tyler, Texas, which is more or less 100 miles from Dallas. I don't think I was literally planning to purchase a gun, as I recollect I was just bored and looking for something to do that day. Anyway, I did buy a Rossi M92 lever rifle in .44-40 that I wanted to use for cowboy action shooting. I bought guns a few times from fellow cowboy action shooters but I don't think any of those trips to the games was as far as Tyler. I drove further just to play cowboy action games but not to buy guns.

I've driven 340 miles round trip for what I want. I'd drive further if it is something that I want. Drove 150 miles to pick up a 45-70, when I paid him he said good only have one to go. I said one to go? Ya he said, pointed to another 45-70 laying on the bed. Came home with two 45-70's that day, made the trip even better.

Farthest I've ever driven for a good gun deal... 270+ miles from Carrollton to Houston for a Winchester Mod 42. Picked up my dad on the way in Corsicana for some company.

When someone posted about the LE trade-in Sig Sauer P220s, I made the 80 mile trip one-way from my house to the shop in Coatesville, PA that was selling them. The gun was immaculate, looked like it hardly had been used and it came home with me. And as an added bonus, I got to meet 31FordA at the store.

I have driven over 1000 miles to hunt several times. I have driven 250 miles one way to drop off and then pick up rifles worked on by a trusted smith but the farthest I've traveled for an actual firearm purchase was 180 miles.

I made an offer below asking price to a gentleman at a local gun show. He made a counter offer I was willing to pay but couldn't afford that day.
10 days later when I had the money i called him and the gun was still available. When I suggested I could meet him somewhere half way he just laughed and told me when his shop was open.

Over 15 years ago, I drove 130 miles to meet a forum member to buy a Classic nickel smith in .44 special. At the SWCA meeting in Richmond, I traded it to Lee for a nickel 58.

I can't remember the member's name but he worked in a women's prison in Wisconsin.

About 115 one way for a revolver, bought from another forum member. Worth the time and money. 700+ (one way) to a dog rescue for adoptions, twice. Well over 2000 one way more than once to train with Pat Rogers. The longest of those was central WA to N. Carolina. Should have seen the looks on other attendees faces when they saw the WA plates. Did that one with Mack, my rottie of the day. He made lots of pals in the cabin and at class.
