Rolex Value???

1993, Datejust, Hardly ever wear it. Just sits in the safe. I had it serviced 2 years ago. Black pyramid dial. No scuffs, dings or scratches anywhere. Bracelet is tight.

I am thinking of selling it. Anybody got an idea on value? I have done some researching. Went to a watch dealer that buys Rolex watches. I knew he would lowball me, and I did. He was raising his price all the way out the door

Beautiful watch. I recommend you find a reputable Rolex retail jeweler and take it for an estimate. You can also call Rolex in NYC or search for an authorized dealer on line.

Pete, bobswatches.com. In CA.

I sold them a Rolex a few years ago. They offered me 8x what a local jeweler and his Rolex guy offered me.

I called them, they sent a postage paid overnight label, and overnighted a check when I agreed to their offer.

They obviously needed to see the watch before the offer, but no obligation on my part.

They are upfront and honest.

Ask ditrina, he will tell you the same.

Does it have the box and certificate?

If base on the watch itself, pre-covid two tone date just was around $2.5k-$4k range in my area. These days with this inflation ****, who the hell knows.

To be honest, people always want either Subs or GMTs. Datejust is classy but desirability is not too high.

Pete - I am no watch expert, so I will use a firearms analogy. There must be a web site similar to Gun Broker for watches. Maybe see what recent completed sales have brought for your model?

I would also find someone local for an appraisal, making it clear it's not for sale. Just like asking a gun shop about a desirable guns value, you usually get two prices - The one it is actually worth, and the one they present (low ball) if they think you want to sell.

Take it to two places that deal in Rolex's and tell them you need to know the value for your insurance company. That will tell you the value of the watch. Much like firearms, figure a dealer will give you 50% or less of the value and you can sell it yourself for around 80% or higher if you find the right buyer.

I never got the Rolex "thing", but then I never got the "Apple" thing either. As a DIY guy, every watch I own shows battle scars with some failing to survive altogether. Even my dress watches are not immune to being dinged, scratched or worse.
 
My nephew is a watch dealer. He says the used market for Rolex is crazy. Used watches bring more than new watches owing to the fact that the new watches are back-ordered for years to come. He has clients who buy several watches a month from him and they just lock them away.

If you mean are Rolexes mechanical the answer is yes.
Rolex is perhaps the very best in maintaining brand cachet-crazy insane pricing-My Seadweller I paid less than 3k for in '96 fetches over $11k now :eek:
 
Rolex is very much like Smith & Wesson. They're mass-produced, but as mass-produced goods go they do a good job. I wear a 25 year old stainless steel Rolex Date (same as a Datejust but with a slightly smaller case), and it never misses a beat. It still looks fantastic, still goes in the shower with me every morning (this helps keep it bright and fresh looking), and it gets bumped around the world like all everyday carry items. I think back in the day I paid around $1200 for it ... the same watch, new, retails for well over $6K now.

Forget about the appraisals. They mean squat when you go to resell a watch—in the same way that nobody cares what your S&W revolver appraised for. The best places to get a sense for the market are eBay (where a huge number of Rolexes change hands) and Bobs Watches. Whether you choose to use either of those is up to you, but that will at least give you some sense for real-world market values.

My gut feeling is that a 16233 like yours would sell on eBay for about $6K—give or take depending on the day, the weather outside, etc.

If you never wear it I guess selling it sort makes sense. That said, my Rolex has only gone up in value. It is the only watch I have ever owned that after 25 years is worth much more than I paid for it (about 50% more)! Not many watches I know of would do that.

Bob's seems to be the number one place to sell it but you should wear it again. After wearing mine (24/7) for 20+ years I stopped wearing it on a daily basis for a few years. I was toying with the idea of selling it but when I started wearing it again about 10 months ago I decided to keep it. My Wife has the woman's counter part and we do enjoy them. Since they only seem to go up in value, I see no urgency in selling it - unless that money is dearly needed for something else.
 
Just got back from vacay, wasn't keeping up with this thread.

With box and certificate, I would test the inflation market around $5500 private sale and will not give to dealer for $3k. If you really need to dump it I understand.

They have, or have had in the past, a quartz or two in the line-up. The mechanism of those is darn near as pretty as the mechanicals.

At my Omega watch forum those are going for around ~$5k depending on condition.
These were pre-covid prices too (2021), so maybe more now?
As you know, Rolexs are in an all time high demand right now with used bringing more than new in some cases because you just can't get the new ones very easily now.
Grey Market is crazy right now.

I bought a Rolex Submariner w/o date in 1988 for $1100 in the dealership here they are about $6000+ now and I never paid sales tax on it. I drove from Fayetteville to Fort Smith and saved 500 dollars and no sales tax. Jeff
 
Since you cant buy a new one at an AD anywhere in the world right now since the BM has bought all the inventory and is now selling on line for double. You would get a huge amount if you sold it your self on line. Most people even Rolex owners don't follow what going on in the market like the collectors do.

Okay, fellas, here's another one.

I gave this to my wife in 1999. Paid about $3K, I think, in Japan at a big discount store. She wore it maybe for a coupla years or so, so it has some visible light scratches. It has never been serviced, so would need that, but is in good working order insofar as I can tell. And she kept the box, all the paperwork, and the extra links:








On the face: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified.

What I see in the documentation: Model 79173, Steel G, Serial Number A299483 (on the sales slip; the Rolex certificate has that plus a prefacing "810 Chronomètre").

Does "Steel G" mean steel and gold? My wife speculates the gold isn't real, but I think it is.

And how much value % does having documentation, box(es) and extra links add?

Editing to add again: Checked an inflation calculator. $3K and change in 1999 is dollar $5K and change today. Just reflecting on this as inflation eats up a lot of perceived increase in value, Rolexes and everything else. ("Well, duh!," says the Forum in unison...:))

Re eBay - if you sell there, they will report the sales proceeds (over $600) to the IRS and it will be taxable income. No idea what the used watch dealers do about reporting their purchases. It would be a good idea to check that out before selling. A direct cash sale to an individual might be better.

If you would like a second opinion I could connect you to my nephew. It's a smaller shop but they are a Rolex dealer.
