Roll pins

Hey guys, looking for a bit of info on the roll pins that hold the firing pin into the bolt.

I need to replace mine and pretty much everywhere in the UK is currently out of stock. It’s not the end of the world if I need to wait a while longer but does it have to be a specific one for the M&P or will any one of the correct size be suitable? If so, does anyone know what size they are so I can start searching.

The firing pin retaining pin I received from S&W is marked;

Part# 404780000

Pin, Coil Spring 3/32 x 5/8

I don't think there is anything special about it if you can source it else where.

Cheers mate. Looks like I’m in even less of a rush than I thought.

When removing the old pin, my roll pin punch got stuck in the bolt, I’m guessing it wasn’t as parallel as it’s meant to be. I’ve tried getting it out but it’s wedged solid so it’s going to have to go to a gunsmith I think.

There are slotted roll pins and coiled spring pins, both perform the same function only in different ways. Coiled spring pins are supposed to be better at holding under shock and vibration. Coiled spring pin's are also better for use in out of round holes. From the S&W description it look's like they use a coiled spring pin. M16's and AR15's use slotted roll pins, never had anything on one of my AR's come loose. Don't know if it would matter which style you used.

Strange Davi I just spent an hour playing with my bolt roll pin to install a new firing pin. My punch got stuck in the roll pin and i finally removed it. I decided to leave the original firing pin in the bolt until I got some replacement roll pins. If you can't find a suitable roll pin let me know and I will send you a couple. Not sure if the Forum has PM but my email is
[email protected]. BTW does anyone know the correct size punch to use? The roll pin is coil spring 3/32x5/8. I assume I would use a 3/32 punch? The punch I used got stuck into the roll pin. PIA

Thanks Bowzette, I really appreciate the kind offer. I’ve got a bit of time to source them whilst I try and get the punch removed but will be in touch if I’m still struggling.

My punch damaged the pin on the way out but did manage to punch it out and then firmly wedged itself into the actual bolt. It wasn’t even like I was hitting it particularly hard but it’s firmly in there.

I am a slow learner but realized I need a "roll pin punch set" and not use a regular punch. I just ordered a set from Amazon. My problem was the punch stuck in the roll pin, not in the bolt. Was your punch tapered so as to get larger as the punch was inserted?

I’ve ordered some roll pin punches for future use but this was a drift punch that was supposed to be parallel for a long length until it tapers to the handle. As it’s a cheap one it must not of been as parallel as it’s meant to be u fortunately.

I worked on hundreds of split pins, when in the service, working on and repairing all the pistols and rifles.

The key, is having the "Correct size" punch or drift pin for the roll/split pin that needs to be removed.
Gun damage or removal problems will happen with incorrect diamiter equipment.

Tensil strength is not a problem, unless it is from a "Full Auto" firing unit.

The folks seemed to have talked all round this, but effective assembly/disassembly with roll pins is a piece of cake with the (PROPER) use of roll pin punches------and a TOTAL ROLLING DISASTER without them.

Forget about the punches----save your money, and enjoy the misery if you're a fan of self-abuse. Get the best set money can buy otherwise.
