Rollmark Placement (L or R)

I have noticed that some guns have the S&W rollmark on the left sideplate and others have it on the right sideplate. I looked in the SCSW and it doesn't seem to be covered.

What I would like to try and find out is when the rollmark placement changed from one side to the other. Or did it depend on the Model of the pistol?

Any thoughts, answers or speculations?

Hi Bob,

There's a lot of variation in the logo rollmark and as you surmised it does vary according to model and vintage.

Look up a specific model gun in the SCSW and there is usually info in the text referenced as the S&W trademark. For example in the 3rd edition on page 119 in the "Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit Gun" text you'll see it referenced.

The floor crew at the factory would have a meeting once a month and decide which side to put the roll mark on. I have one Smith with the roll mark on both sides.

I can see that this is very possibly heading down the same path that the thread about the funny marks on the Highway Patrolman barrel took.
