I hope this helps a newbie figuring out which first AR15 to buy, or to build, and how much it may cost to build one.

After about 40+ hours of research on which first AR15 to buy, which led me to this forum as I was dead set on a MP Sport because of the low price... I decided to build an AR15 from the bottom up. Mostly because I wanted to know what each parts function was with gun.

Here is what I bought this week:

Spikes Stripped Lower - $115 OTD - Golden State Tactical
2 Surplus Stripped Lowers - $72 each OTD - Atomic Tactical
PSA Lower Build Kit - $86 OTD - Palmetto State Armory (PSA)
Complete 16" Upper 1:7, chromed - $281 OTD - PSA
Bolter & Carrier Group - $168 OTD - Bravo Company (BCM)
Large Extended Charging Handle - $51 OTD - BCM
Dro's and Transfer Fee's = $55 - Fairfield Pawn (cheapest in Bay area)

OTD = Out The Door

Total Cost = $900 and that includes all fee's and taxes ( I saved on taxes with everything via the mail but the shipping made it a wash) plus I still have 2 extra lower receivers for future builds!

I bought three lowers because I really wanted the Spikes Jolly Roger. I bought the other two on sale and I saved $$$ with only 1 DRO's fee since it was a simoultaneous purchase.:D

If I use one of the Surplus Lowers, this build build only costs $713 total!!!!

I also saved $ because my neighbor has all the tools to make this happen.

I will probably add a EOS red dot later for more $$$. Well, let's be real: I totally got the bug and will probably spend a lot more $$$ in the months to come!:p

I hope this posts helps someone figuring out which direction to go and how much it costs! A few re-occuring themes I came across that might be helful are thus:

1. Research Different Forums as some are biased

2. Smith & Wesson MP 15 rifles are excellent Rifles, I still want one! You should feel very good if you buy one.

3. Many name brand parts (Stripped Lowers) are made by the same manufacture and therefore are the same. They just have a different Logo on them which you are paying for!

4. Buy what YOU WANT. I paid $115 for Spikes Pirate logo because that is what I wanted! It is the exact same lower as the Surplus Ammo Stripped Lower and costs almost twice as much! But it is what I wanted!

5. If you want a Colt , buy a Colt! BUT DON'T BUY A Colt because 20 folks in a forum tell you that only real men use a 6920/6940, or because they have "the Chart", or because they tell you it's the "Gold Standard" in AR15's. (Even though it probably is the gold standard!)

6. Buy or build the gun that you want to own, the one that feels right in your gut. Go shoot one first before you make a decision. I was able to shoot two of my neigbors AR15's, he has a short barreled "clear the building" type with a red dot and also a 20" barreled pimped out one with a $1000 scope for Zombies at 500 yards. Everying I read in the forums made total sense after I shot his two different AR Builds (triggers, scopes, length of barrels, furniture...)

I went with the "Clear The Building" type for my first build. Very similar to the MP Sport. I went his way as an entry level so I get the feel for the AR15 platform. So my next build will be even better. If had more money, I would of ordered a more expensive upper barrel assembly. But I went with entry level as it was on sale and fit my needs (plinking and varmits).

In summary: It took me about 40 hours of reading different forums to get the AR15 bug really bad!

In fact I was consumed about research and found that I enjoyed learning about the AR15 platform so much that I wanted to build one for the experience and comradre (a neighbor is helping).

Now I have ordered all the parts (that I chose myself) and am excited about the Road Map to my first AR15. I could of bought a Colt for $1,000 or a Sport for $650...But I never would had the same level of knowledge or personal enjoyment that I have received out of my experience.

At the end of the Day, I feel great about what I have done thus far. And I also feel confident that when my gun is put together, it is going to go Boom when I pull the trigger!

Cheers

My only disagreement is your choice in twist rate. With a 1:7 you are pretty much stuck with heavy bullets which generally means expensive ammo. I prefer 1:9 or 1:9.5 for all around performance.

29aholic,

I agree with you completely. My motivation was the $269 sale from PSA for the complete upper barrel assembly (I wanted to hold off on a more expensive upper until the next build). I would have preferred a 1:8 twist...But having the bug, I couldn't wait for that one to go on sale:p

I know thoughts very on this topic. My 2 cents is that I am plinking at a 100 yards (or less as this is my "clear the building" weapon with EOS red dot) and it should perform as desired for this. I am using 55 grain PMC and can not wait to do a comparison myself with 55g/62g and 75g/77g.

The good news is: I have two more builds:D

Cheers

Welcome to the club and you were smart to buy 3 lowers as you'll want to build more of them. I've built three now myself with the last one on a DPMS lower and a CMMG Wasp 22lr upper. Now I can shoot .22lr for cheap out of an AR platform.
As you've figured out you won't really save so much money but have the enjoyment of doing it yourself and knowing the rifle too. I had to buy the tools myself but now that I own them my builds are a little cheaper.
Enjoy and do post some pictures when done.

Thank you Brian41, Good to be here!

The day after I bought the 2 lowers for $69 each, Palmetto had a sale for blems for even cheaper...I was tempted to buy 2 more since I had the Dro's already paid for! haha

I really like the SW MP 15-22. I haven't researched the 22 conversion yet. Yahoo, something else in the future to have fun with after my AR15 builds!!!

Cheers

AR builds are similar to 1911 builds in that there are numerous parts suppliers to choose from. Ask 100 AR owners for their respective opinions, and you'll get 100 different responses. The keys are 1) research; 2) identifying your own specific goals and needs; 3) building a rifle that YOU want. It sounds like you have all the bases covered.

BTW: I've always had excellent success running Sellier & Bellot .223s through my ARs. Cost effective, clean shooting, always available.

Good post. I have a complete 20" Bushmaster target barrel AR and a second 16" Bushmaster upper. My original plan was to sell the 20" upper and put the 16" upper on my lower. That kind of went by the wayside and I decided to build my own lower. Then I'll either have two or try to sell the Bushmaster.

I'm slowly buying the parts I need for the lower build and like you decided to buy a slightly more expensive lower. The outfit I'm buying from buys the forged lowers and then does the machine work. I've seen the quality of their work and decided to splurge on the extra cost just because I like it.

I also have a friend who has the tools needed for the build so I'll save there as well. My estimate right now is that the entire rifle will cost me about $850.00. With a dizzying choice of custom parts there is really no end to what you can build.

I think it will be fun and a learning experience to build my own lower.

Thanks again for the post, it's very informative.

I have something in 1:9", but honestly, I'd like a 1:7" or a 1:12" (Ideally, even a 1:14") instead.

a 1:12" does better with the lighter cheaper stuff, and it seams like most "good" ammo is beyond the "weight limit" of 1:9".
Its not like a 1:7" cant shoot the 55 gr stuff, just that the other twist rates work better with it.

I don't see any magazines in the list. I bought some Thermold 20 round mags from CDNN Sports. They're definitely the budget mag. I have 5 30 round Pmags. I see you splurged on the BCG. PSA has them on sale (full auto) for about $120. Still, you cannot go wrong with Bravo Company.

I bought a suppressor for the .223. My advice is to save your money. That thing barks pretty loudly. i am able to shoot it without ear protectors though. If I were doing it again, I would get a .30 cal suppressor and a .300 blackout upper.

I built a replica of an M16A2. I built it with Sarco's kit and a PSA CHF barrel and PSA lower. If I were doing it again, I would buy the upper from OOW and buy all new parts (probably from PSA).

;)Thanks: Forrests, Garys, Mc5aw & JayKellog,

Thanks for the reply. Yup, I need mags and me thinks a dust cover kit too. Not sure what comes with the complete upper yet. Will know in the next week when everything arrives and I pick up the lowers after my 10 day wait!

I read that the BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) was an important part of the gun and BCM (Bravo Company) was rated very good in every forum. Seemed like a great place to spend a little extra.

I wanted to get a complete upper for the first build, but next time I might try build the entire upper!
Thanks for the OOW (Ohio Ordance Works) lead - looks like a good one!

Honestly, right now prices are up and inventory is low or out of stock on all the good quality low priced parts. I think maybe it's do to the election coming...

Your probably right about the gun being loud. My friends AR15's are very loud - I bought some Home Depot ear protection. My ears still hurt from shooting last week without the ear protection!@#$% I thought I was too old to be that stupid! A Suppressor sounds like a good idea (pun intended).

I bought a 1000 PMC 55g from Cabela's last month for just over $300 OTD during their sale. I just noticed they had 75g for sale...maybe I should buy some more! I will definitely keep and eye on the price of Sellier & Bellot ammo though, thanks for the heads up.

Below is a pic of my friends two AR15 builds that I have been shooting plus a couple of my other guns I had in the bedroom (Springfield .40, Beretta .380, and one trap and one bird gun).

Cheers

For just alittle more you could have had a Colt, BCM or other excellent maker and a warrenty. Which is the only thing you are missing.
Look around, RRA, Bushys, Doublestar and S & W s can be had for less than $900. Building used to be the way to go but now even using all Model 1 parts you can still buy an excellent gun for dang near the same price.

I've used three Spikes lowers in the past with zero issues. Spikes is GTG. And they seem like a deent company to deal with as well.

I agree with the "Buy what You Want" rule.

My last build I used a NOVESKE lower and a few of their parts. I wanted to...so I did.

You are getting into the AR mania LATE my friend. Way back these things really were cheap to build yourself. Especially if you had someone with an "In" with Uncle Sam or was an Armorer for some big Federal agency.

I still have a Heinz 57 parts Gun a Federal buddy of mine built for me back in the mid 1990's. My share was very minimal. Those days are over.

Congrats on your build! Your next couple will be fun too. You'll have 'em stacked up like cord wood in no time.:D

Totally agree - build it the way you want it. I'm far happier with my builds than my purchases. My current favorite upper is a Colt 6940 so, best of both worlds there.

I like your Calico Jack choice! Like PSA kits too, especially with the ALG trigger and Magpul grip.

Jolly Roger

Rburg: Arr back at ya! Yup, I just felt like having a Jolly Roger on my killing Machine!

Thanks Desert Fox, I was looking at the ALG Trigger, but I read that there were some issue with it too. I think I need to read more about it. On the next build for long range hunting at 200 yards, I was thinking of using a 2 stage enhanced.

Thanks Frank237, yup I am a little late to the "Mania" but at least I made it! :D

If you buy a complete upper you should get everything except the BCG, charging handle and rear sight. I think the OOW M16 uppers are also missing the forward assist.

I bought the parts all apart. I had to have a gunsmith install the front sight base and put the barrel into the upper. That cost pushed my build a little higher than I liked. I also didn't care for the way Sarco machined the bolt carrier, so I bought a new M16 bolt carrier.

Today you can buy a 1903 Springfield or an M1 Garand, but you cannot buy a Mil Surplus M16. You can buy M16s, but they cost a lot and they are not really military. All you can do is build a parts rifle. That is what i have. Some folks buy 80% finished lowers and have them engraved just like an '80s M16.

JayKellog,

Nice Toy! I was actually thinking of getting my finished guns engraved!

Which EOS Red Dot should I get for 5-50 yards/meters/ Thanks
