Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman

Thanks in Advance

Thanks guys...neither of mine have numbers but one has the caliber scratched in.

All 4 sets I have owned (N frame) had the number 44 scratched inside on both grips which I assumed to be frame size (could have been caliber I guess). 3 sets had a date scratched inside - something like "8-24-37", and 1 set just has the number 13 scratched inside which I was not able to correlate with anything. There were no other numbers or markings.

Here is a set that is marked. Were they made in 1949 or was the 44 frame serial #49191?

I have two pair. One pair is marked 916 on each panel. The other pair is marked 1064 on each panel. I choose to believe these are order numbers/customer numbers. I choose to believe any/all grips without a number (of 1,2,3,4, possibly 5 digits) on each panel are those produced before they started to number them. I choose to believe any frame size markings were placed there by an owner. I choose to believe any brand marking (S&W, Colt, etc.) were placed there by an owner.

Bottom line of what I choose to believe is I choose to believe any markings which would likely prove to be helpful in the operation of a grip making business were placed there by the folks in the grip making business---and any other markings were placed there by somebody else.

As an aside I believe I can prove to pretty much anyone's satisfaction any caliber markings were placed there by an owner-----prove it with Roper's own words (from his writings) where he essentially ridicules the consideration of caliber in the design of grips.

Interesting that tomdrpm's set and the second set that paplinker posted (those were actually once in my possession) are only a couple digits away

I have a set marked 48XXX=38 that are for a K frame. Not much detective work necessary to figure that they were originally made to fit a K-38 in that serial range. I also happen to have a K-38 in the K 48000's, but not the same as the number on those stocks.
