I have a Smith 629-4 square butt, that i'd like to have rounded to use S&W's Hogue rubber grips made for the .500 X-frame, but I know I have to have the round butt to be able to use them.

If i were to have a gunsmith due this kind of work, what all is involved and how much could I expect to spend on this kind of rounding?

thanks for any input!

I figure 200 bucks or so.

Why not cut it yourself. Find a nice pair of wood stocks, then mark the frame where it's too long. Use a grinder and trim the heavy stuff, then use a belt sander for semi finish. Then very fine sandpaper and you made a Round Butt yourself.

Just make sure ths SN in not removed.

good luck

Why not trade or sell it and buy what you want. I am not a fan of a round butt on anything other than a J frame, and even then I prefer a square butt. I had a round butt 629-4, 3 inch barrel that I traded away because I am a square butt man. Post it her for sale or trade, it most likely will go fast, there seems to be many more round butts than square butts out there. I would cut only as a last resort.

Used to make a jig as a guide for converting square butt to round and as I recall the jig sold in the neighborhood of around a 100 bucks. You may want to go to their web page and see if they still make the jig and you can always contact one of their gun techs for advice from the page.

I have the same desire for my smith 65. Its an older police trade with a few marks, so I'm not too worried bout the weapon bein the prettiest. I too was hopin to find someone who would grind it down. But not for $200! I bought the weapon for only $300. I was just looking to mount some more compact grips. Maybe I will give it a shot on mine and let you all know how it turns out?
