Round butt model 19

When I was in service (1965?) my dad bought this model 19 with 2 1/2" barrel for me. I don't recall when, but at some point I sent it to S&W for a 4" barrel (anybody want to buy a 2 1/2" 19 barrel...). I've always liked this gun. The action is wonderful and she's very, very accurate. As with many of my revolvers (the serious ones anyway) I prefer them with stock grips and a spacer (either the old Pachmeyer or the current T-grip).

I have modified a few M19s, a M15, a M25-5, and a M24-3 to the round butt style. It fits my smallish hand much better.

I have a four inch Model 66 that I had round butted. It made a great gun even better. I carried it on duty for several years and a couple as a detective. Great gun for concealment.

The four inch K frames with round butts can be concealed very well. I much prefer them (from a professional point of view) to the 2" barrel "K"s. I would argue that with a well designed holster you can conceal a K frame three or four inch handgun better then a two inch.

You are correct. When carried in a hip holster, a 2-2 1/2" barrelled revolver tends to tip out away from the body. A 4" barrelled revolver carried in a pancake style holster hugs the body better because the longer barrel against the hip pushes the butt into the wearer's side.

Butt style and size has more to do with how a revolver conceals than does the barrel length.

Can't say I have ever seen a RB 4" M-19, but I handled a NIB RB 4" 66 at Green Top in Richmond several years ago.

I have large hands, but a round butt K-frame still fits my hand better than a square butt. I had not heard of a round butt M19, until today.

I just picked up a Round Butt Model 64-5 with a four inch barrel. It is my first 4 inch K frame RB. Would like to get another like a RB M19 or M10. Very comfortable to shoot.

It may be sacrilegious to some, but a SB gun can be easily modified to a RB - the RB grip allows more modification to better fit the hand. Especially the older style RB grips with the covered back strap - you can create a grip that's smaller than the SB, yet larger than the RB - and still conceals well .............

Here is a factory four inch 19-3 .

A comparison of top straps including my two factory four inch round butt 19s. The second (far right) is a later 19-7 which was one of the last 19s. Smith used all round butt frames in later production.

When we had our gunshop/police equipment shop on Broome St. in NYC (Next building to the Equipment Section) we built a number of 4" barreled model 19 revolvers by changing out the 2-1/2" barrels.
We also had built some .357 Magnum model 10 heavy barreled revolvers.
Cannot disclose the source of the barrels and cylinders used, as they were not avalable from S&W parts department to the general trade.
Must have made several dozen of each.
Many of the .357 Model 10's were done for guys in TPF.

Keep the original barrel with it for whomever inherits it.
