Round-shaped flat screwdriver?

Those have been around for a very long time, and not just for guns. Popular as advertising give-aways. Somewhere I have one dated 1948 with 4 blade sizes which was intended to go on a keychain. Colt adjustable sight target guns from at least the 1950s (and possibly earlier) were packed with them, and they had the Colt emblem stamping. Those I have seen were blued. To the best of my knowledge, S&W never shipped that style of screwdriver with their adjustable sight revolvers.

I cannot comment on their collectibility, but if you found one with the Colt stamping it would probably be desirable to Colt collectors. I suspect you can find similar keychain screwdrivers on eBay, and that might provide you with an estimate of value.

I checked, there are a lot of the Colts listed on eBay. Search for Colt screwdrivers. Usually in the $5 to $20 price range. Also a lot of the advertising type are listed for somewhat less.

I bought a few of these off of EBAY back a few years ago.

A little bigger than a quarter and has the four blades coming out on 4 sides. One side has the S&W logo and the other has "LAW ENFORCEMENT AND SPORTING GOODS" "SINCE 1852" on it.

Mine is a thick stainless (I think) with a hole in it for a key ring.

I keep one in my range bag, have one that is still new in the baggie and gave one to a friend who purchased a new 686.

Read once they were a giveaway to distributors to be given away.

Welcome aboard.

I thought I remembered the round, flat, four bladed screwdrivers from S&W revolvers in the late 1980s or early 1990s. So I looked in the SCSW 4th. Sure enough, it shows the four blade type from 1988-1991, and then a two blade type from 1991 on (until when, I don't know).

The last new S&W I bought was in 1989. I purchased a brand new Model 36 LadySmith for my daughter's 16th birthday. It might have had a flat screwdriver in the plastic box. She still has it, so I'll have to ask her.

The last new S&W I ever bought for myself was a Model 14-4 in 1983. It, of course, came with the fluted aluminum handle SAT. It is in my safe, still NIB, so the SAT is still with it. I've lettered it and it shipped in July 1980. I guess it sat on the dealer's shelf for three years!

Thanks for your insight on the flat SAT. I'm interested in collectibility and provenance so I'll pass on "promotional" items.

Thanks again, glad to be on board with this group.

I had a Colt round screwdriver that a person wanted real bad for his older Colt revolver. He gladly paid me $10 for it.

My Colt Series 70 Gold Cup that I bought new in 1979 came with one. It is still in the box in my safe.

I formerly had several Colts with their original boxes which had that screwdriver - excuse me, Sight Adjustment Tool. It seems more practical than the SATs S&W supplied. I remember that they were in small waxed paper envelopes.

Forgot earlier but I picked up this handy little tool at Newegg.com. Has a couple of screwdrivers, knife, bottle opener, etc. Even has 2 Allen wrenches for Crimson Trace adjustment on the back. With a belt clip. Pretty good tool for the range bag

I wonder . . .

When they started shipping these flat, four bladed screwdrivers, were they really for sight adjustment like the old "SAT?" After all, I don't see why you would need four different blades to adjust the rear sights.

Does anyone know?

You don't. But they might have been useful for other purposes such as removing the grip screw or other gun screws. More blades don't take up any more space so why not? I have seen similar examples with three blades, also some have a different shaped blade which could be used on Phillips head screws.

It's highly likely Colt bought an existing design made by another company, and Colt had them stamp the Colt logo and blue them. Possibly Colt did the bluing.
