After Gibson Guitars left Kalamazoo for Nashville, some employees and a fist full of luthiers decided to stay in Michigan. They borrowed money and purchased some of the buildings on Parsons St, some machinery and started Heritage Guitars.

Roy, along with Johnny Smith and Kenny Burrell, were their chief endorsers. Being a dealer, I got to go through the factory and meet everyone. Roy put on a clinic and had lunch with us.

He was born genuinely funny. He couldn't help himself. If there was a punch line hidden anywhere in a conversation he would find it. We got along great. We would see each other at the NAMM shows and never talked shop opting instead for comedy relief.

Wonderful human being with chops for days.

Godspeed.

Saw Roy a few years back at the American Music Theater in Lancaster, PA. He led into playing Malaguena with an apology that he would be playing it on a backup guitar as his regular "Malaguena Guitar" had exploded on him while performing it the previous weekend!! His lead in was a hilarious silique about being in mourning over his late, great instrument.

One of my favorite performances of his.....

IMHO the greatest guitar player ever. A great comedian and not a half bad actor. :D
Back in 1985 he made a movie with Mel Tillis called "Uphill All The Way". Silly little film with a dumb plot, but the prefect vehicle for this pair. Watching Roy and Mel playing off of each other is hilarious. :D
