Royal was born November 2, 1897. Russ Eubanks, Royal's
grandson says Royal was born November 2, 1896, but the 1910
census recorded Royal as a child of 12, so I tend to believe 1897
is the correct year. He was living in the home of his grandfather
Marcus D. Wood in Centralia, Washington.

Royal passed away April 25, 1955. He is buried in Cloverdale
Memorial Park in Boise. His grandfather Marcus was a harness
maker with a shop in Centralia, Washington, so it's easy to see
where Royal's interest and skill at leather work came from.

August 27, 1921 Royal married Bertha Reed. They had
one child. A daughter Jean. In 1937 Royal was working in
the mines in Silver City, Idaho. He met Mary Eleanor Latimore,
who became his second wife. They had two sons, James O. and
Thomas R. Russ, mentioned previously was a son of James.

Royal toyed with the idea of a holster business in 1937 and
1938, and finally started Eubanks Leather in 1939 in Boise in
1939. The war years 1941-1945 were kinda tough going for
Royal, but after the war the business prospered and he had up
to a dozen employees. Some of my holsters, and the Eubanks
maker's mark, made between 1939 and 1949 are shown below,
left to right:
Basket weave stamped and laced made for 4" M&P.
Floral carved and laced black holster also for 4" M&P.
Carved and laced cordovan double loop made for 7.5" SAA.
Eubanks Leather maker's mark.

In 1949 Royal sold his business to the Pioneer Company along with a
covenant to not compete for 5 years. Pioneer also obtained a trademark
#72136810 for Eubanks Pioneer Leather Boise, Idaho. In 1954, upon
expiration of the non-compete agreement, Royal Eubanks went back into
business as Idaho Leather. There are holsters simply marked The Pioneer
Company, Boise, Idaho. I suspect Pioneer might have used this stamp
after Royal Eubanks went back into business in 1954 as Idaho Leather.

I have located a photo of Royal taken in 1953. I need to go to the
library and make a copy. Then I will try to post it here. Meanwhile,
here are some Idaho Leather photos, left to right:
Basket weave and laced holster for 4" S&W N Frame.
Basket weave and laced holster for 2" Charter Undercover.

The business was operated by Ben Wetzel, Bud's son, until Ben passed
away Saturday, December 17, 2017 at the age of 77. The property has
been sold, and the equipment sold or disposed of. Idaho Leather is no more.
It will be missed.

A few asides. Milt Sparks was quoted in a magazine article saying he
had worked as a sewing maching operator for Royal Eubanks. Pioneer's
trademark expired January 11, 1988. I have read that Pioneer Company
had purchased Roy Baker's Pancake business. Don't know if any of the
3 are fact or legend.
RIP Royal L. Eubanks

Right again, Sgt Phil. We do know exactly when Royal lived and died:

The Census birth years are often wrong by one year; because of the way the question was asked: 'how old were you on your last birthday?'. For that reason it is considered to be an estimated birth year on Census records, and I myself keep looking until I can be sure. Both Sam Myres, and Tom Threepersons, gravestones don't even agree with their death certificates! And have not been corrected to this day. And don't get me started on Myres' second wife Eva, whose birth years vary with her every appearance in the records including her marriage certificate (younger, of course).

Royal was an auto upholsterer, according to his various appearances in the record including city directories; why he chose to branch out into gunleather is a puzzle because there is no similarity in the technologies. The leathers are different, the machineries are different, the distribution channels are different.
