I just bought a 686 + round butt, 2-1/2" Performance Center revolver.

While I like the appearance of the wood grips I much prefer to shoot with rubber grips.

Thoughts on Pachmayr Decelerator? Others?

(I cannot pick up the gun until the paperwork arrives in the mail. Should be this week or next.)

I have Pachmayrs for all of my S&W revolvers and a couple of Ruger single-actions that I will use in the winter months because of the weather out here in the Northwest.
I swear by them, for what that's worth.
Decelerators do reduce felt recoil, which is important in a magnum revolver.

Pachmayrs.....

"Compac" have a covered backstrap (what I use on my 4' roundbutt 686 for shooting full load .357s.

"Compac Professional" open backstrap.....nicer smaller size for CC.

I like the Uncle Mike round butt grip for the K/L-frame. It's larger than the Hogue Batam, but fills my hand better. No longer in production, so you have to search for a pair (eBay).

I dress up my 686 with Kuracs when I carry. I use packmeyers for matches. They may not be pretty but Pacs provide a sure grip and resist scratches 😀

Rubber are fine but take em off and don't store them with the rubber grips on them. They will Marr up the grip frame. Guarantee it. Or use good oil all the time under them.

Good point . . . moisture trapped between the unprotected grip frame and rubber will eventually produce rust.

However, I would use synthetic oil (like Rem-Oil) because petroleum-based oils will turn some rubber into mush.

Hogue Monogrips, love them on my 686. Good speedloader clearance and great shooting comfort.

For CCW I use the Pachmayr Compac Professional with open back strap.

To prevent rust under any pistol grips, apply a medium-heavy coat of a good NON-Auto wax.
(Auto waxes are not suitable for this purpose).

Don't polish the wax off, just let dry for 30 minutes then replace the grips.
The coating of wax will prevent rust since it seals the metal off.
This works much better then any liquid lube and works better then grease, both of which can run off and be absorbed into wood grips.

Don't apply wax to rubber grips, but you can also coat the inside of wood grips.

I like the Grippers and the softer Decelerators. The only problem is finding a good set. These grips require trimming after molding. Some are done well, some poorly. Last week I returned a Gripper set to Pachmayr for replacement because of the crude appearance.
They have a great product but with quality problems. I wish there was a local store that carried them so I could pick them out in person.
I told this to their customer assistance department. They need to redesign the grip so it will come out of the mold ready to mount, like Hogues.
I like them much better than Hogues because they protect my hand much better without impairing my grasp. They make my L frame shootable with full power loads.
