Ruger 10/22 fans?

I wasn't looking for one, but a close friend in a bind was trying to sell his 10/22 stainless target rifle with synthetic stock, spiral hammered bull barrel, matching Bushnell scope, and sling for $250. I didn't want to take advantage of a friend down on his luck so I paid him $300. Was it a fair deal?

You can't really put a price on friendship. The value of the rifle could depend on how much it was used, but that sure seems like a fair price for both parties. If he's down on his luck you may want to offer him the option to buy it back for the same price once he gets back on his feet (if you haven't already). Nice rifle! They are fun. I've never tried one with a heavy barrel but it looks extra fun

YES. You did good and was fair to you buddy as he probably wouldn't have got that amount selling it to a gunshop, but you would have paid more at a gunshop. I have one just like it with a target scope on it. I shoot flies with it at 25 yds. It loves Wolf Match Extra.

They are what they are, certainly not a blued/walnut beauty like a Winchester 63, but a reliable and generally accurate .22 that will serve 99% of folks 99% of the time. I have several of them and while a bit of modifications can pay dividends, the only weak link I've ever noticed is the magazines gumming up. Enjoy your new rifle!

I have a deluxe 10/22 I bought new in 1976 for $60.00. A few years ago Bass Pro had a bunch of the Butler Creek bull barrels go through the outlet store for $50.00. I searched around and found an old walnut sporter stock which I grooved out for the bull barrel. I redneck free floated it with a folded business card. With Eley 10X it will shoot sub 1/2 MOA groups at 100yds.

When it was still in its original form I actually wore out a factory magazine. Bone stock the gun would shoot an inch at a 100.

BTW I think that is a laminated wood and not synthetic stock on your gun.

Good price on the 10-22T, I have one. They are very accurate.At 25 yards,you can cover up 10 shots with your thumb.

That spiral bull barrel should put all your hits at 25 yards in one hole. I built up a 10/22 years ago with a Midway .920" barrel, and a Fajen stock. Did a trigger job and glass bedded the barrel full length. It will put 10 rounds in 3/8ths" at 50 meters.

They are great fun, and match grade accurate. You got a good deal and you treated your friend O.K.

It's a fair deal and will be more accurate than a standard model 10/22.

I liked this one so much with a BSA 6 -18 x 40 Sweet 22 on the top, $350 new, exclusive of scope:

I bought another just like it and put a Bushnell Holosight on it, $250 used, exclusive of scope:

The Fajen Stock has "Ruger" with the molded medallion. It was a TALO Special model with the spiral forged blued barrel.

The Fajen stock has adjustable: comb height, length of pull, drop, and cant. The combination of rifle and stock is a bit on the heavy side, over nine pounds, and I had to tap for sling swivels, Both are nice shooters. I'm still experimenting with ammunition selections.

That is definitely NOT the low end 10/22.
A lot also depends on how much it has been used, but based purely on the pictures you probably came out slightly ahead, but I don't think the resale value of a 10/22 is that high so you actually helped him out a bit.

Very nice gun, reasonable price on both ends. I have one with the same barrel, just with a green Hogue stock. It was a limited run item carried only by Lipsey's I believe. It shoots like a dream. You will love yours.

I've had one for years and love it.

The only problem I've ever had with mine is the springs in the magazines. They weaken after a while and won't feed the last couple of cartridges out well. You're supposed to be able to take them apart and tighten them, but I've had no success with that. It weakens again in just a few days. I just keep several magazines on hand and throw one away when it quits working properly.

One of the first guns I bought as an adult was a ruger 10/22 deluxe. Not to long after I bought a standard so I would not beat up the better stock if I needed a beater .22.

I liked them both but at one time years ago Midway had a sale that consisted of a stock/barrel for 99.00 and I bought two sets. A coffee laminate and a stainless barrel and a charcoal laminate and a blued barrel.

They are both good shooters n fun to boot! And I picked up another standard somewhere but it will likely get modifed someday or others acquired

Due to all the mods that are available, The 10 22 is becoming a very sought after gun. Where I live, Even used bone stock carbine models are bringing $200 prices at the gun shows.

It looks like yours has the aluminum trigger group as apposed to all the new ones having plastic ones. Great buy.

Good price on the 10-22T, I have one. They are very accurate.At 25 yards,you can cover up 10 shots with your thumb.

Mine will do that at 50 yards.

I paid $300 for mine, used, from my local shop about 3 years ago. Mine is blued. I think you paid exactly what it is worth.

As to modifications, mine include a Volquartsen hammer. This was the best bang for the buck. Crisper and lighter pull. Other V parts include extended mag release, bolt release, extractor and bolt buffer. You don't have to do all this but once you get started it is hard to stop.

There just isn't much to criticize about the good old 10/22! It sort of took over the .22 rimfire market where the Remington Nylon 66 left off and it continues to soldier on. I have one of the nicely stocked Deluxe Sporters with an old Weaver K2.5 scope, and it is a fine combination for squirrels in dark woods. Bill Ruger had a great idea when he combined a rotary magazine with a good basic .22 autoloader.

That was nice of you and I hope you enjoy the rifle.
RFC has a ton of info on them. Folks at RFC tend to beat up on the factory barrels. I have had good luck with mine and venture to say it shoots as well as most any aftermarket barrel would.

After my reply here this morning, I took my two custom builds to the range to try 6 diff brands of ammo, Here is one of my targets after shooting 10 shots rapid fire at 50yds. What looks like a missed shot between the top two targets must be a fly that landed just as i took the picture, cause I'm looking at the target right now and there is nothing there. I do have to blame myself on the center, I took those shots slow but the 1st shot went high.

Do you guys find that your 10/22's feed the walmart fed bulk pack stuff ok? I realize this is not target ammo but I'm a tightwad and shoot a lot of it as it works excellent in my other .22 rifles.

I have purchased two new 10/22's in the last year and neither of them will work with the fed bulk using either the stock magazines or the TI25's. The brass gets jammed sideways in the action during ejection, or the round will not feed into the chamber, jamming about halfway in.

I've not had time to trouble shoot the rifles other than to make sure they were cleaned and lubed properly, but that made no difference.

Like I found out for myself, And anyone on Rimfirecentral will tell you, All 10 22s are different in what they like to eat.

My first custom build would not feed fed bulk no matter what mag I used. I had to go to rem golden bullets which fed a lot better but their QC was lacking, I had a lot of fail to fire due to their primers.

There is a thread going on over there all summer to determine if rem has fixed their problem, Thats why I went to the range today to test 6 diff brands and ended up shooting over 250rnds of golden bullets. The pic I posted in previous thread is all rem bullets, Not a single problem in all the rounds I fired today. Since I can find these locally, and at a good price, It works out great for me when I don't want to shoot up my wolf mt or Aguila.

I use the federal bulk in mine all the time with little issue. I used to get the occasional misfeed (very occasional) from time to time with different loads, but not since I replaced the factory extractor with one from Volquartsen. No failures since, with several thousand rounds of various loads through it.

Wayne, try the V. extractor. It is a pretty cheap mod and I think you will like the result

The Federal is OK. I think the worst for any of my semi autos, pistol or rifle is the Winchester Bulk "Xpert" it has a truncated nose that will not feed in anything I own.

I like the Remington Golden Bullets they work great. My Walther P22 will shoot them all day but will not shoot anything Winchester

For the 10/22 the Winchester Dynapoints are real nice and are very accurate.Any Blazer works well also.

Mine are all modified with VQ parts and on my "tactical" version I use a Tactical Inovations TI25 magazine which is the best of the extended mags. Not cheap but worth it.

Nice looking rifle. I have the stock 10/22T, brown laminate with blued sprial bull barrel. I topped it with a Nikon 32mm 4X scope.

A good price for the gun, new is $379 or so and figure $50 to $100 additional for a reasonable scope.

The value used would depend on how much use it has seen.


In general, I think you got a good deal, but also helped your friend.
