Very interested as well. Check youtube from shotshow2018 for a shooting demo.

I purchased the earlier ruger ranch in 300 blackout and sent an email to ruger asking if I could change the stock to use the AR magazine this is their response

Thank you for contacting Ruger Customer Service.

Mr. Peyton,

We do not offer a retrofit or upgrade so that these models will accept the AR-style or AI-style magazines. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for your interest in Ruger.

No idea on the Ruger but I can vouch that the Mossberg MVP line will accept and feed reliably from 90% of all the metal AR mags I tried. I had the Patrol model and still keep the Varmint. Both were excellent shooters!

I do not want to challenge anyone who wants a bolt action with an extended magazine....but I do not see the point...a bolt action with a long magazine hanging out the bottom....ruins the balance...and the ability to get into a low/prone firing position. What I would like to see..is Ruger...with its GSR....and other bolt actions....with a receiver that will accept stripper clips...

Just bought both the 7.62x39 and .223/5.56NATO versions. 10rd AR mags are just one with me, but the 7.62 came with a 5rd mag. I'll be getting a couple ten round mini-30 mags for it when Ruger gets them in stock (currently on BO, just about everywhere). I've mounted a nice scope on the .223, and will probably just start with a red dot on the 7.62. Both very nicely thought out, IMO.

So you're going to have at least a ten round box magazine hanging down...RUINing the balance???
Personally I would like to know how well the POI holds out through a mad minute with that big magazine.

could you reread what I posted and tell me how you came to the conclusion I wanted a long/big magazine?

How do you get in the low/prone with a 20 or 30 round mag hanging out of your AR?

You're in at least 10 rounds for stripper clips. The second part as my own thought about POI shift.

So you're limited to probably a sitting position with the 30 or 40's, but there's considerable fire power there. I'm not really worried about a 20 round magazine. With a .308 it might be a bit long, but it's doable. With a .223 that's a nice weight.
We need one in 30-06 that accepts BAR magazines!

sorry...dude...but 7.62 NATO come in FIVE round stripper clips....would not be hanging out the bottom of a bolt action....the Springfield M1903....comes to mind...

the idea of a 30 or 40 round magazine hanging out of a bolt action is ludicrous....

The new Ruger American 7.62x39 bolt action rifle will accept Ruger magazines only.

It will not accept aftermarket magazines like the Ruger mini-30 does.

I bought 2 10-round Mini 30 mags from Ruger. Both are too tight in the American Ranch, I can hardly get them in or out. And one I sent back because of a flaw inside that caught the follower. The 5-rnd mag that came with it drops free and works great.

I’d happily try a ProMag in it.

Already own the Ruger American with rotary mag. VERY nice, compact little carbine that makes a lot of sense in a "post-prepper" sort of way...once somewhat wakes up and realizes getting into "firefights" in a post-SHTF survival world is a quick way to no longer need air.

There is nothing at all new about detachable box bolt guns...I think the British pretty much set the concept with the Lee-Enfield, and who doesn't remember the FN 30-11 with detachable box.

Having a larger magazine capacity that can be rapidly replaced on a bolt action is a great idea, long vetted.

I love everything about the Ruger American EXCEPT the cheesy, plastic, somewhat flimsy, rotary magazine. The only thing the rifle needed to make it superb as a "Scout-sniper" rifle is a sturdy, durable, robust, reliable magazine such as the Magpul AR design.

I just ordered a .223 AR magazine version and was glad to pay the extra money for a turn-key, compact, highly portable, light-weight, simple and reliable rifle.

Don't know if such a model exists. Might want to look at Ruger Scout rifles if you want a bolt gun with a detachable mag. I have one in 308 that I like a lot. They also make them in 223. 308 comes in 3 5 and 10 round magazines. ASICS pattern mags. I like the mags that Ruger and Magpul make better than the steel ASICS mags because they are shorter. You can either use the iron sights and or a forward mount scout scope or take the rear apperature sight off and mount a traditional style scope over the action. Not the best rifle for anything but pretty good at most things. They are handy. Since 308 recoil doesn't bother me unless I shoot a lot I've passed on the 223 scout rifle.

More expensive than the Ruger American. I have a Ruger American in 223 bought for a lite sporter. Found a CZ in 223 and the American sits in the safe waiting until my son grows into it. Nothing wrong w it the CZ is just a better rifle albeit at 2x the price.

There are other options particularly if you can live w a right hand rifle. Marlin makes a rifle that takes an AR mag only right handed though. I shoot left handed. My son shoots left handed. As such I don't keep up with the right hand stuff as much.

Re the comment about BALANCE the mag is basically at the BALANCE point so no real change.

Finally if I wanted a mag fed Ruger American I'd want the 7.62x39 version. Ok I have written Ruger 2x asking left hand please I'll buy 2, one for me and one for my son. Anyway inexpensive ammo plus almost a 30 30 so would do for a deer and hog round. While I love 308 there isn't any dirt cheap 308 anymore. If surplus 7.62x39 was any cheaper they would have to pay you to shoot it. For plinking i love cheap ammo that i dont have to handload. While I know I can kill stuff w a 223 I prefer more thump out of a cartridge for game animals. While I've shot and recovered hogs w a 223 I've also shot and not recovered hogs w a 223. If I want a hog for the freezer I use bigger than a 223.
