Ruger Old Model Blackhawk dis assembly

I have an old model Ruger Blackhawk(no transfer bar) with an aftermarket wide target hammer that I'd like to re-install the factory hammer in. There's all kinds of videos showing how to disassemble a new model but not the old. I'm wondering if after removing the cylinder, grips etc I can just pull the hammer screw and remove and replace the hammer without disturbing the other internals?

Be sure to use a proper fitting screwdriver for your grip frame screws. Even if it properly fits the screw slot, make sure that the diameter above the screwdriver blade is not to wide. otherwise, you will gouge the edges of the holes in the grip-frame.

Good to remember ; But I've had a lot of experience in working on firearms over the years.

I've got a good bit of experience with OM Ruger BH series, they
are the only ones I mess with. Very easy gun to completely strip
and reassemble. I always relieve main spring, remove and then
remove grip frame (5screws), at this point it is easy access to
removing/ replacing hammer. It is a lot easier this way than
inserting main spring assem. from the side. On old model magnums, if yours doesn't have nylock screws, I recommend
grip frame screws be Locktited. I have seen a lot of 41 & 44s
shear the grip frame screws, the ones behind trigger guard. This
was because they were loosened by recoil.

Now all I have to do is find a replacement old style hammer somewhere since Ruger won't sell me one.

Ruger did and probably still does free replacement of the old internals to a transfer bar set up. They return the original parts with the gun.

My Dad had a Ruger Single Six from 1959 or 1960. The first owner had worked on the internals to give it a hair trigger. Dad would not send it in to get it fixed. I fired thousands of rounds thru it.

It wore down over the years and one could slightly bump the trigger from the side and it would fire. Dad liked the hair trigger. Like I said it was almost to the point of not holding the hammer back, dangerous. I inherited it and immediately sent it to Ruger. It works very well.

This is an option.

I would scrub ebay and the online gun auctions for someone selling the parts after a transfer bar set up was added.

You might start with a WTB here or on a Ruger forum.
 
The OM Blackhawk hammers are 2 different sizes depending on the calibers.
One for the smaller 357 frame,,and one for the 41, 45 and 30Carb. frame.
There may be small differences in upper contours between the large frame hammers, I'm not sure. You have to add the early 44mag Blackhawk in the second caliber group too before they built the SuperBlk'hawk.

The difference is in the height from the hammer screw pivot straight up to the top of the face of the hammer. The 357 hammer being the shorter of the two of course.


,,,just wondering,,Does Ruger still return your OEM action parts to you when they convert an O/M Single Action to a transfer Bar. They used to. But then I heard they started keeping the old parts.
I just never sent any to them for converting,,but worked in one shop where every O/M went back to Ruger for conversion before it was put back out for re-sale.
Just a CYA thing.

I sent mine back, 22 LR, but the trigger had been worked on before Dad bought it and it had become dangerous.
The parts were returned but I would never use them.

Post a WTB on the Ruger Forum and you will find one pretty quickly. There was an ad for 6 hammers for sale just last week. Like mentioned, you just need to know if you have an old model single six, 357 midsized gun or one of the larger framed guns for 30 Carbine, 41,44 or 45.
 
Thanks for all the advice guys. As I stated mine was NEVER converted but someone at some time installed a wide spur target hammer. I just want to re-install the correct hammer. As I see it I need the correct hammer for a 357 and that's what I'll kook for.

Dis assembly? All Ruger factory owner's manuals are available from
Ruger just for the asking. I currently have four old model Ruger single
actions and none have been converted and never will as long as I am
allowed to own them.
