I've seen them sell for anywhere from a low of $1000 to a high of $1400 at auction over the last few years. Those prices have been pretty stable over the last decade. $1200 is a good average, and $1000 versus $1300-$1400 really depends on whether you stumble across a buyer who wants a set bad enough to pay the full market value.
Right now, gun prices in general are down, and older collectors who like things like revolvers and Winchester lever guns are dying off faster than they are being replaced by younger collectors.
As for actual collector value, they are not appreciating in terms of real value, and are at best holding their own against inflation (which isn't bad however). More importantly, at $1200 they are not bringing anymore than the revolvers themselves would bring individually in LNIB condition, without the fitted case.
So no, they are not all that "collectible" from an investment standpoint, but left unshot they will hold their value against inflation for rainy day savings purposes.
But I'm like you, given the questionable investment potential, I'd buy a set as "shooters".
