I’m looking online at a local gun shop’s inventory, and they have a very nice-looking 6” Sec Six Ruger with a $550 asking price, and manufacture year around 1976. Looks nice on paper, and the price to me isn’t out of line, is it high? I plan on visiting the store tomorrow (closed today and yesterday) and if it’s as nice as the one picture shown, and more importantly if its innards feel good, does $550 seem close to a decent asking price for a gun shop?
I have a slightly older one that feels great to shoot (4” barrel) and hits where I aim 15-25 yards.
In the meantime I’m trying to reduce my inventory but I really like the Security Sixes.
Help me blow my money or save for an upcoming gift buying season. Thank you. Jeff T.

The Six-series guns are climbing in value as people have begun to realize how excellent they truly were. '76 has that cool bicentennial mark on the frame and it also predates Ruger's ridiculous barrel billboard rollmark, which makes it more desirable. $550 is a pretty good price these days for one in good cosmetic shape.

For comparison's sake, I recently paid around $700 for this '76 Police Service Six (including Gunbroker fees and shipping) with its original box.

I paid $250 for mine...NIB and with all the paperwork as well .
That was about 15 years ago now though .
Yes I would say $550 is fair....if it's in very nice condition that is.

I bought an excellent condition 4" stainless SS .357 with original factory grips a few years ago for $400 and put a Wolf spring kit in it and its different from a Smith DA pull, but very manageable. I found some Herrett Shooting Star grips for sale very cheap and the gun looks and handles great and it's my favorite woods handgun and I don't risk scuffing one of my Smiths.

Security Six update today

Update: I stopped by to check out the gun today. After two hours hem hawing back & forth with myself I asked to put a down payment on it; he pulled it off the shelf & said "It'll be here." So will I tomorrow. Oh, I said 2 hours...I meant 2 seconds! Angel was in the car and I don't need her barking at everyone. Pictures tomorrow, I hope. It is really a fine-looking revolver for a '76 made (I didn't check the date myself) piece of iron & wood. It had no reference to Bi-centenial but I'll go over it tomorrow. I may even have some springs from a Wolf kit but for the price of that, and the already nice trigger, I needn't worry about it for a while.

Oh, BTW everyone, have a safe & peaceful Halloween. The TCM Channel (no commercials) has a bunch of old horror movies playing. The original Dracula just started.

You won’t regret it!

The closest I came to a 6” Security Six was a reservation suicide gun. The dearly departed was a white guy married to a Blackfeet woman. He fired three rounds - two into a stump and one into his noggin. .357 soft point 158 grainer, which worked decisively.

We did our investigation, but it was pretty straightforward. He had thoughtfully left a note in his own handwriting.

When I went to return the gun to the grieving widow I had three hundred bucks and a bill of sale in my pocket in case she didn’t want to be burdened by the long barreled Ruger.

She answered the door, grabbed the return of property receipt, signed it, snatched the gun back, and said: ITS ABOUT TIME. MY BOYFRIEND HAS BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!

Bye bye Ruger.

My only one currently is a .38 Special Speed Six.

My 6" wears Pachmayrs, replaced the to heavy factory springs with Bullseye or Trappers, has a smooth and light trigger pull with 100% reilabiity.

Good buy !!! Grab it!!!
I have my Father in Laws blue six inch and my buddies 4 inch stainless that we have sold back and forth twice. Both are tuned and the 4 inch has millet sights. Great guns. Sure you will never manage to break it they are built like tanks - but be aware factory dosent support this series anymore for service or parts. The Ruger target grips are excellent.

Solid guns, my first centerfire revolver was a Security Six. Still have three; a four inch Security early model, a Service four inch and a Speed Six 2 3/4 inch. 1976 should be the later model so after market grips won't be an issue.
