I took a beautiful motorcycle trip this week with one of my shooting buddy's and we went to a friends house up in the Berkshire Mountains. My friend had just gotten a new Ruger 10/22 take-down and it actually (barley) fit into his saddle bag on his m/c. So we had a nice ride up and decided to take the new rifle out and see what it could do. Here is my personal informal review of the Ruger take-down:
The rifle was decently made for a $325.00 gun and the fit & finish of the synthetic (plastic) stock was OK. It was wearing a Nikon 3 - 9 .22 Rimfire scope and the scope did keep its zero upon multiple assembly and dis-assemblies. We were shooting Hi Velocity American Eagle 40 grain LRN bullets and while there were no "bad rounds", there were 3 or 4 jams during our firing of about 150 rounds. I'll attribute that to the fact that the rifle was new and fairly dry. Accuracy was acceptable from this type of rifle; we could keep a 5 shot 1 inch group at 25 yards from a bench rest. The downside of this rifle was its 8 pound trigger pull. Not only was it very heavy, but it was also quite gritty. I do believe that had it had a better trigger, groups could have been a little better. All in all it is a good rifle if you have the need to transport a compact .22 either in a car, plane, boat or motorcycle and would also make a good camp or canoe gun. If this were my rifle I would definitely do a trigger job to bring the pull weight down to at least 4 pounds and smooth it out. The thing I did not like was how the rifle operated. It is a royal pain in the butt to operate the bolt, take the magazine out and keep the bolt in an open position. I am sure you Ruger 10/22 owners know what I am talking about.
IMHO if you DO NOT have the NEED to take a rifle down, the money it costs would be better spent putting towards a CZ 453 American or similar high quality gun. I know the CZ and comparable guns do cost more, but they are in a totally different class. Again, if you are an Outdoorsman and do have the need for compact firearms, the new Ruger is about the best of the modern take-down Rimfires I have tried. Just my .02 cents..........
