Rule for storing stuff.

Have you ever had your wife ask you why you did not throw something away. "You know you don't use that anymore."

The rule is:

If you throw something away, you free up space for your wife to buy something to put there. It is better to wait until you have something to put there before clearing up the space.

This rule applies to the garage, refrigerator, closets, shelves, and drawers and any other place that you can put stuff.

Charlie, you tell my wife to throw out all those shoes and other stuff you mentioned. I do so much like to sleep in a warm bed every night. And eat too. On the other hand the tins that the Christmas cookies come in are mine. And certain of her ointments containers. Why just this night she has a gallon jug of soap that is almost empty. Gonna use it to store oil for my lathe in. Same grade plastic as my 5 gallon diesel oil cans. Frank

And don't even mention all those shoes and stuff she has or you'll be fixing your own food for a long time. Not to mention the fact it is colder sleeping on the couch than that nice warm bed.

We have been down sizing now that we have retired, we have gotten rid of lots of stuff. She only has 3 closets of shoes and clothes now. I am down to 6 pair of jeans 10 shirts and my underwear and 3 pair of shoes/boots. I find if I keep my tools and reloading stuff organized she who cooks does not tell me to get rid of things.
I have learned not to mention the amount of shoes or clothes she has. She just goes out and buys more. Once I asked why she had 6 pair of red shoes, I was told there not all red and they each match different out fits. I have a black pair ,a brown pair and tennis shoes.

car parts are like that, keep every nut and bolt or bracket cause if you dont, one day , youll need one just like it -and you wont be able to find it anywhere in any store
my wife is almost a hoarder i think(not really but its fun to say)
my wife has a large walkin closet plus two dressers and she keeps hanging stuff in other places in the house -my closet, guest closet , laundry and even in my gun room sometimes!
i have work clothes, my good clothes are just work clothes that dont have holes or stains yet.

I have two rules for keeping stuff: 1- If it hasn't been used in a year, out it goes. 2- When in doubt throw it out.

We built a new house in 2009. I had them put stairs in the garage that go to the attic. We also put flooring in the attic and lots of shelves so that she could keep all of the stuff that she refused to throw away when we moved from the old house. When we both are gone, my son says that he will get a dumpster and throw all of our junk in it except the guns and tools.

I have just ordered a 13 yard dumpster to be delivered to my old family compound. Since 1948 the attic began to fill, and in my dear old moms last decade she was inclined to keep most everything that came to her, and the box it came in. Sunday supplements from 1980 onwards....
Tax records and childrens school books, many damaged by hurricane rain.
There's even a RockOla juke box from the old family poolhall.
Piled to the ceilings.... Lordy...

We have a small two bedroom house. One bedroom is full of unused gym machines. Wife is long term convalescing from a operation and I cant bring myself to start working out. Too cheap to get rid of it and other stuff. My and theresa`s entire lives we have fluctuated about 3 wardrobe sizes and I refuse to throw out good clothes I might be buying again. The garage is full of plastic storage boxs etc. Impossible to actually get a vehicle in it. Got two trucks, a car, quad and a airplane. The plane is 400 miles away in california. My biggest problem is finding something when I need it.
If I ever get lost or someone calls and says we are passing through, where do you live I just say look around and see what house is being circled by buzzards. None of this is theresa`s fault, totaly mine.

Joe you hit it on the head. I made the mistake one day of cleaning out my side of the closet. Now it's full of her stuff (stuff she hasn't worn on 20 years and could not get into on a bet-there I said it). She now wants to clean out the shed-OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!

Like most only children I am not good at disposing of stuff. My father was the same and rather than throw nick-nacs away he snuck them all into my stuff when it was sent from the UK.

I am also still trying to catch up after my ma-in-law and my wife passed away. Some of the stuff could be worth something, but my patience is gone with the rest of the family. They only want to cherry pick or say "I don't have the time to come and help sort that out now" so some of the local charities could do well over the next few months. If at a later date somebody asks what happened to a particular item I shall just play dumb.

When I'm done I'll be able to park my truck in the garage again and have places to mess about with computers and work on guns.

A big YES and amen to keeping all car nuts and bolts. I have several old tool boxes full. My 1st Jeep was a Willy's M-38. I ended up with some body bolts. That was in 1969. I took all the Army top bow bracket bolts and some other bolts off when I put a Buick V-6 in it.

My Wife and kids bought me a new seat for my John Deere 3020 when I retired this fall. Almost all the old seat bolts broke off while I was removing the seat. Amazingly the Willy's bolts worked perfectly. The bolt boxes have been moved 10-12 times in the last 40 some years.

There is no statute of limitations on keeping nuts and bolts.

P.S. Every time I go buy bolts the escalating prices drive me nuts.

I never throw out hardware, spare parts, or anything with monetary value.

There is the odd trinket with purely sentimental value...and that just is what it is.

I actually have more clothes than the wife...but none of it is new...I just like to wear things until they fall off.

I can relate. I left with what was mine and let them squabble over the rest.

Man, can I relate to this, but both my parents were pack rats, and so am I. Plus, my Dad was also an only child, so I have oodles of stuff that were my grandparents. I have a cousin who wants my Mother's wedding and anniversary rings, just to have them made into something she likes. Ain't happening.
