Through my life, the Robin Hoods have been Errol Flynn, Richard Green,
Sean Connery, Patrick Bergin and more recently Kevin Costner.

Now Russell Crowe will step forward as Robin Hood, but he will also play
the Sheriff of Nottingham who is honorable while ye olde Mister Hood will be, well, a hood.

I suspect it will be fun.

I think Crowe did a good job in Gladiator and Master & Commander, but I have not been impressed with any of his other acting parts. You would think that, like Batman, Robin Hood would pretty much have been movied to death by now.

This Robin Hood is directed by Ridley Scott (they did Gladiator together), so it's going to be pretty cool.

In The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, it was noted at the time that the Hood's costumes, the sets too clean, etc. etc. really weren't 11th Century. Warner Bros. replied, basically, "You want history, go read a history book."

It was wonderful fantasy but the recent ones, though still fantasy, looked more like the 11th Century. The plague is coming! The plague is coming!

Errol Flynn was a little effete. I'd rather see Russell Crowe bring a little machismo blood & guts to the role.

I suppose it's way too much to ask to have a Robin Hood who could actually pull one of those 150+ pound pull long bows? Or who could acually swing a full weight broad sword, let alone fence with one?

Barb C,

Sure old Errol was a little effete---what guy wouldn't be in those tights and pointy hat?

But regarding the making of the film, Claude Rains also said he wanted to play Prince John as a bit of a foo-foo. When warned that the censors wouldn't let it happen, he replied that they'd never catch on.

Erroll Flynn had little feet? I love his song, "Dixie Chicken".:D

You don't fence with a broadsword. You hack with it.

Also, as a historical note, the Sheriff of Nottingham does not, and did not, have any jurisdiction over Sherwood Forest. But why spoil a good story.

There actually almost certainly was a historical figure of Robin Hood. There are existing records of a Robin Hod being executed for highway robbery in the correct time period.

All the very best legends have some basis in actual fact.

An interesting interpretation was "Robin and Marian" with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. It looked historically accurate and portrayed an aging bald and tired Robin Hood after he comes back from the Crusades. Robert Shaw was the Sheriff and quite good as the villain.
