I have a friend that has a side-by-side shotgun, which is blued, and has some rust on the top of the barrels. Is there a way to safely remove it without any harm to the firearm? All advise greatly appreciated. Thanks
The best method I've found is to use a piece of 0000 steel wool with some gun oil. Rub gently and go slowly an the rust should come off relatively easy. There will usually be a darkening of the metal where the rust was, but it will still be a marketable improvement. Keep oiled to prevent the rust from coming back. That's it - relatively simple.
The fine steel wool method is about as good as any. The 'rust removers' will also remove bluing, which you don't want. I'd get a light coat of oil on all surfaces ASAP to keep any further rust at bay.
I tried something called Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner. It is a ball of metal alloy ribbons. Buy it off the internet for $5, and it did exactly as it said, removes rust with no loss of bluing around it.
If you can fine bronze wool (usually Marine shops) it is better as it does not fall apart and rust. But if not the steel wool works fine. I use a Blue kitchen 3M cleaning pad (non scratch)
