Rust Removal

I know there are many techniques but what have people found to be the most successful way to remove rust from blued steel without removing the bluing as well? I bought a project Remington 700 that a guy forgot in his yard for a WEEK!!!! Lots of surface rust. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I like to use 0000 steel wool with liberal doses of oil. Plain new motor oil is fine to begin with. Gently, let me repeat that, GENTLY rub the affected areas with the steel wool careful not to scratch the good bluing. Once you've gotten most of the rust off, then wipe it down gently and replace with something like Breakfree CLP. Most rust removers will work, but they'll take the bluing with it. I've had great success using this method on old pawn shop 22s.

Start with oil and bronze (not steel!) wool. Will usually remove rust without affecting the bluing.

Someone on this forum recommended CorrosionX, found at True Value hardware and other stores.

I have used it with good success. Spray the rusted area and let sit for a while. Take a piece of 10 guage copper wire and wrap in a loop. Rub the rust with the softer copper wire. Nothing will remove the pitting, but this method will remove the rust without harming the bluing.

Wipe down, degrease and apply Breakfree.
