Rust spots

I just bought my sd40ve, and now it has little rust spots on the top, I haven't even taken it outside yet it's just in my safe, what can I do to clean it up and prevent it?

I have heard this before. I just don't see folks get rust spots on stainless. I have used 000 steel wool on blued guns with good result but not stainless. A light wipe down of gun oil should keep it from coming back.

If you have a large upright safe a dehumidifier may be a good investment. They make kits for safes.

Yeah I'm not sure how "stainless" rusts, but I'm kind of ticked that this gun is literally 2 weeks old and already has rust spots on the slide, I haven't even got to shoot it yet, I wiped it Down liberally with oil last night to prevent any more rust..

Thanks for posting this, I haven't noticed any on mine but I will be sure to put some more oil on the slide to make sure. I assume you're supposed to just put oil on a rag and go over the whole slide, just enough to coat it lightly?

That's what I did, is just lightly oiled the whole slide with gun oil and a mismatched sock haha.. I'm gonna call s&w tomorrow too a see if they know of a way to get it off without damaging the finish..

Ok cool... I wonder if theres some other problem with it. I mean only buying it 2 weeks ago... and already having a problem. Maybe theyll have you send it in and they can fix it or replace the slide.

Yeah it seems a little extreme that "stainless" rusts after two weeks of sitting in my safe

I normally just use MPro 7 to clean then light coating of gunbutter. I have had the same problem with my guns its just where I live thought. I was checking over my daily carry and noticed some light rust spots on the hammer.

By the looks it seems it may have come into contact with something. Maybe something corrosive possibly at the LGS and the humidity of being in the safe. Who knows maybe S&W can help you out.

A safe is not really a safe place for guns!

I've had humidity problems in my safe on more than one occasion. Years ago my safe was in a spare room where I had closed off the heater vents - bad idea! I turned the heat back on and started using Dri-Z Air. The problem went away. The I moved to a different house and the safe went into an un-finished and un-heated part of the basement. Even though I added a heater (Goldenrod type) it was not enough. I added more heat (a total of 18 watts) and still use Dri-Z-Air. No more problems (so far).

Just because you don't see actual condensation doesn't mean there isn't enough humidity to cause rust. I experienced the same rust as you did on a stainless Ruger P95DC with no detectable condensation.

Oh - by the way - Stainless is not. Stainless rusts and corrodes just like any other steel - just not as much or as fast.

Any thoughts on a way to clean it off? I oiled it well, and turned on the heat in the room it's in.. So it's shouldn't get any worse..

fine steel wool, scotch-brite scrubbing pads, eraser on the end of a pencil, etc. etc. - just be really easy and go slowly to blend the new with the old surface.

Use 0000 steel wool and some oil, work the area lightly and keep it damp with oil.....you can find 0000 steel wool at any home center or hardware store......

It seems like the finish should be more durable... I'm. Gonna call s&w customer support today or Monday and see what's up
