Went to a very small local gun shop to buy a pound of Unique and was surprised to see three very, very nice S&Ws there on consignment. Evidently a local collector is selling off part of his collection. 4" M&P circa late 1940s - $649.00, M27 - $699.00 and a M28 $749.00. I asked why the M28 was priced higher than the M27 especially as they were both pretty much the same condition wise and was told the M28 was built on a rare "S" frame that was slightly larger than the "N" frame and was only made by S&W for a year or two. I said that I'd never heard of an "S" frame and the gun guy said he hadn't either until he started doing some research on it - I guess at the behest of the gun's owner ?????. Can't find anything in SCSW or anywhere else. The 28 did have a six digit S prefix #. As an aside after an admittedly cursory glance at all three I would say they were all in 98% plus condition. Not interested at all in any of them but an "S" frame ???????- more than a little skeptical.

Let the buyer beware!

Either there is a lot of BS going on or somebody is confusing the "S" prefix range with a frame size.

Show me the research.

I would say the M27 could be a buy depending on bbl length and age.

Sounds like he is confusing the serial # range with frame size. The N frame guns carried an S prefix in the 50's and early 60's. This serial # prefix changed to N in 1968 I believe. It was the same frame size.

Reminds me of the Model 1950 45acp target I had for sale a gun show, when a table holder came over to look. He went back to his table to talk to his expert and came back to say that the S on the butt indicated a reblue. I was speechless.

I would agree with these guys on the S&N prefix, also the beware thing, there's alot of "them" out there! Ron B

This is the second bologna we've seen today about "S" frame 28s. I guess some of these so called "experts" think if it's an "S" serial number it's an S-frame gun and if it's a later "N" serial number it's an N-frame gun. As stated, one even thinks an S-frame gun is larger than an N-frame gun.

"Psst. Hey Mac...*man with fedora hat opens coat* Wanna buy a super rare 'S' frame? I got 'em right here. Only $3999.95. These were brought about by Agent Ness...yeah. Shhhh! Everyone will want one!"

:p

How about my rare M frame Kit gun ! ( It must be an M frame - it's got an M in the serial number!) Hoppe's , you need to go back to the small shop and say you have it on good authority that that S means the gun is a reblue! Maybe they will drop the price for a refinished gun! Ed.

Hey Dick,
You got any of them there "S" frames you want to sell? LOL

I have you all beat. I have and original .38-.45 cal, A frame three shot square cylinder with glass grips. I could be persuaded to sell for the right price.

Back before the N became part of the serial number - when they were S prefixed, did they call them N frames?????

E-Gads,

The one I'm wearin' don't have a alabet pre-fix...Must be a really rare one.

Speakin' of rare, I think I'll have a Porterhouse tonite.

Heard the term "S Frame" applied to abbreviate the verbiage for "S" serial numbered N frame guns.

But then some lacking person has gotta screw it up & assume there really is an "S" frame ***sigh***.

I too would make a move on the model 27.....

"Why is the model 27 priced so high compared to the rare S frame? You have a rare S frame over here for only $50 more...I can do $500 on the model 27...for only $50 more, the S frame is the better by even though I prefer the looks of the model 27 and I'm on a budget"

You could definitely use the situation to your favor. Apparently neither the collector or the owner of the store really know S&Ws.

This S thing has been going on for awhile. About five years ago I bought a S prefixed 28-2, as I was doing the paperwork the clerk said he had a few calls on this one that very morning about the rare S 28. Funny thing as we haggeled the price down to $315.00 from $399.00.
