I've inherited a nickle plate 38 special w/2 in barrel Serial S957461. Seems to be hard to get info on this series! Best I can tell is it's from 1946 or so... (and it needs cleaning - it's been in an attic for many years)

I'd guess maybe 1947 or 48, the last ones were in 1948 at S999999 with the first in 1946 at S811120, according to the 4th Edition of the S&W Standard Catalog. You'd need a letter to know the exact date and a letter would tell you to where it originally shipped. Nice gun, I like the MOP grips and holster too. I have S837418 which shipped in June of 1946. Maybe JP@AK will be along with more information, he's the guru on these. Welcome to the Forum.

Hi and welcome to the S&W Forum.

Your postwar .38 Military & Police revolver probably left the factory in November 1947. The nickel finish appears to be original, but the pearl stocks clearly are not.

I do show other 2" units in that serial range, so yours is apparently part of a run of 2" units in that serial range. It has the square butt, which is much more common during the 1946-1948 period.
