Good Day Everybody.
I am a new member and recently purchased a S&W M41 in very good condition. The serial number is A590799, I am curious about the date of manufacture, can anybody help?

Oft times, guns that were exported out of the US for other nations have special features, or appearance, that we just don't see. So, there is that factor. You will shortly be hit-up for picture/s, LOL.

Can you carry their? Permit? Cash into the right palm/s needed?

With the understanding that S&W did not manufacture or ship their products in serial number order, your model 41 most likely was shipped in the spring of 1980.

An example of the difficulty in dating by serial number: A466834 was shipped May 1978 and A486852 was shipped June 1976. Eighteen digits apart but shipped 23 months apart! Only a letter can give the exact ship date.

So my gun is 45 years old, still looks new.



Regarding Victor Louis question, yes, we carry guns in South Africa for self defense as well as for sporting purposes, but they must be concealed, holstered or in a gun case. Guns and ammo are strictly controlled, permits for hand guns take abut 3 months to process and require motivation, references, police search into background etc. Once you have a permit you can carry a gun into a bank, seems odd, doesn't it?

In our area, virtually all banks are "posted" against guns and knives. An exception is a bank chain that includes the local home town branch. It is not posted.

During COVID, I found myself standing before the teller and it hit me that I was wearing a mask, carrying a concealed pistol and it was completely "normal" and legal.

IIRC, about $57…all in unmarked, small denomination bills.

Not if you have no intention to rob it. Would a crook go through all the permit and investigation process just to own a gun?

No, they just happily handed over the cash. Keep in mind it was during COVID. So, that was $17 to buy a dozen eggs and $40 for the next day's Happy Meal lunch.

There's a misprint in one of those serial numbers - otherwise they are 20018 digits apart, not 18.

Thanks Tom for the correction. Just a case of fumbled fingers on the keyboard. It should be A486834. May 1978 for A486834 and June 1976 for A486852.
