Hello I recently joined the forum based on a recent find I encountered a few days ago. I stumbled across a S&W 1076 and quickly put it in lay away. I'm not sure if it's an FBI gun or not but meets all the criteria I think? It has the checkered front strap and has the warning label engraved on the slide stating the weapon can be fired with the magazine removed. The serial number also starts with TFP and has two small indents under the decocking lever that I'm told supposedly makes it a Fed gun.

Not entirely sure if I buy that or not but if it is a FBI issue then that's a bonus for me..I got it just because I love the 3rd Gen auto's and have been wanting a 1076 for a couple of years now. :D

Here's a pic oh and it's gonna run me $600 when it's all said and done.

P.S: The pistol has the straight grips anyone know where I can locate a set of the FBI "palm swell" grips?;)

I don't think the two dots make it a Fed gun. I am pretty sure that they mean that it WAS sent back when the recall was made, I think for decocker problems. Same for my 1026. But maybe the decocker problem was only on a run of Fed guns. Maybe someone who really knows will pipe up.
 
Thanks for the replies so far guys! The price originally was $675 before taxes but I talked them down. Not counting tax..I'm pretty much getting it for $550 but he included sales tax so it's gonna be $600. I still think that was fair though.

As for the FBI thing I don't care if it is one or not..if anyone can clarify that it is one that's cool if not I don't mind either way. I just wanted a 1076! :D
 
I just paid 800 for one (w/original box and 4 magazines) and counted myself lucky. Mine is definitely an FBI version however, for the price you are paying I would have jumped on it FBI gun or not.
 
At $600 you have a great deal on any 1076. The fact that it has SN prefix of TFP there is a possibility that it is one of the original 2500 sent to Quantico VA as an FBI test pistol in 1990. I have a verified FBI Pistol that has prefix TFK. It was shipped to the FBI in Quantico VA in 1990 as one of the orignal 2500 or so. The ONLY way for you to know that... is to get a S&W Letter for that pistol. That will verify if it was shipped to the FBI in Quantico in 1990. If it was... and there is a decent chance that it was..then that $50 letter will make your 1076 worth about 2X what you paid for it as a collector's item.
If not they are awesome 10mm pistols and at $600 it's a very good deal.
Definitely worth the $50 investment for a certified letter.

Thanks I'm pretty excited to pick it up.:D It seems looking for the palm swell grips is gonna be harder then I thought. Tried Numerich and Midway USA both say sold out and discontinued. Anyone know of any place that might have a set for sale?
 
Just wanted to bump the thread if anyone could give me anymore info on my 1076! :D Also attached a second pic showing the other side.

Now my opinion, and that's all it is. My guess, based on odds only, is that it is not an FBI pistol. I say that simply because of the checkered fore strap on the grip. Most FBI guns that were agent guns had vertical grooves only and your serial number prefix is not one of the test pistols.

But there is also no indication to say that it is not an FBI pistol. For most people, it's just easier to say "You have to get a factory historical letter" because that is the only way to know for sure. I hope it is an FBI gun as it is always great to see them turn up now and then. Good luck.
 
Thanks for the link I'll promptly read through the posts. As for being a fed gun i'm more less interested in the gun in itself. But it would be kinda neat to find out if it is FBI issue. I'll just have to give S&W call about the letter.
 
Just as an update guys I picked up the 1076 from lay away yesterday. Fired 50 rounds of Remington green box through it and it's a sweet shooter! I don't know why I haven't tried 10mm until now.

Now I just need to find a nice set of Palm Swell grips...;)

The two dots indicate that it was returned for warranty recall. SOme have the dots some don't. Either get a letter or call and see if they will tell you the history of the gun.
 
After S&W sold the last remaining inventory, the FBI palm swell grips have become just about as difficult (if not more) to find as a 1076 itself.

In addition to keeping an eye out on the usual online auction sites, I'd "carpet bomb" the gun forums with want to buy postings... you can never tell what might eventually turn up... just like your 1076.

Years ago I ordered a set 4506 grips from Numrich, they sent me a set of 1076 palm swell grips and I sent them back... now that I have a 1076, I wish like heck I had them back.

I'm no fan of DAO, but the caliber and price is right. Nice score!! 9MM, .45 ACP, or 10MM all get my blood going and I happen to have had perfect examples of each until the terrible Mickey D boating acccident........:(
 
FWIW 2 of the 4 FBI 1076`s l have are marked with a small U on the bottom of the trigger guard.I have personally examined known FBI 1076`s with both verticle and checkered front straps and with verticle and palm swell grips.Does it have nite sights?As stated by others only a letter will tell.
 
Actually it does have a small "U" under the trigger guard. At first I thought it was just a scratch but looking closer it is a "U". As for night sights no they are standard white dot.
 
Now you have another reason to letter your 1076.If it letters so much the better.The U supposedly signified "used gun" when they were released by S&W.The FBI 1076`s are a fascinating part of S&W history.

Yeah I will definitely send out a check for the letter when I get some extra cash flow. I just dropped $600 for this 1076 and this week I gotta spend another $100 to get my lifetime carry permit. AFTER THAT I'll mail out a check for the letter. :D
 
Well I am pleased to say I just got off the phone with S&W customer service and had them look up the serial number on my 1076 and it is indeed one of the FBI issued pistols. As soon as I can, I am gonna send out my payment for a letter that will document it as such. I feel like I hit the lottery seeing I only paid $600 for it! :D
 
Good for you,your pistol is easily double what you paid.All the little things pointed to it being a Bureau 1076.Letter gives providence.The U on the trigger guard is a good indicator.I wouldn`t change anything regarding the grip etc unless you can change it back.I have heard 1076`s were carried by agents until around 2005.If you haven`t read the thread dacoontz posted the link to make sure you do,as he said lots of info.Enjoy your pistol.

I have been reading the link provided by Dacoontz..I am currently on page 4. :p As for the Palm swell grips..I am mainly wanting them for the FBI connection but also I have held a 1076 before with the palm swell grips at a gun show a couple years ago and I do like the way they feel compared to the straight back grips. However if I do track down a set of Palm Swells to put on my gun I plan on keeping the straight back grips seeing they are what came with my gun. :D
 
IMHO, $600 is a pretty good price for ANY 10XX gun. With yours it is an armed robbery price!
 
Thanks for the comment. :) I agree...even though $600 seems like a lot of money to buy something...but for what this gun is and where it came from I feel like it was a steal too. :D
 
One of these is for sale in my area for $700. Looks like a nice gun from the pics. Anyone have a pic of the pam swell grips that are mentioned here? thanks
