S&W 1076

I really wish Smith & Wesson was able to tell me who they shipped the gun to. To me it wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't a firearm that shipped to a law enforcement agency.

FBI Model 1076

Awesome Find!

I call S&W about 4 to 5 years ago and they confirmed my 1076 was shipped to Quantico and gave me the month and year it was shipped. Serial Number is TFK 37xx. I guess I should get a letter since the value of this model is going up and up.

I paid $475 for mine with 2 Orange follower mags, tools and paperwork in the Blue Box... in 1994. Purchased from CDNN in Texas.:D

The 10 series never had orange followers... They were first yellow and the later ones were white. You might want to check yours as they may be for a different gun.. I know they 45 series had orange at one time..

There are some orange follower 10mm mags out there, as I have some, but they will not fit the traditional 10xx series guns. Haven't been able to verify, but I believe they were prototype mags made for a prototype gun(s). They will fit the 45xx series guns.

FBI 1076

Dang Aegis you are correct. They are yellow. I bought a bunch of extra 10 mm mags in the late 90s. They are the same yellow. I got hooked on Tens in 93.

10 MM Disease

Aegis
Sounds like You have an awesome collection! I have never seen a 1046. a Damn Unicorn. If you can Please post a picture. How long ago did you aquire them and for how much if you do not mind sharing that info?

I probably would own more S&W 3 rd Gens if parts were available.
Sad state of affairs. I got the 10 MM bug when I lived in New Mexico.

FBI 1076 USE

Not is not an indication, the fbi did not use these but maybe 18 months total. A lot of them ended up in armory surplus stores like my 1076 it was a checkered front strap unit. The 1076 is many things but a back up gun it is not.
I was issued a 1076 by the FBI in 1996 and carried it until 1999. I was issued the second to last one and know the Agent who got the last one. They were certainly in use much longer than 18 months.

Something seems amiss.

An FBI Firearms Training Unit document entitled "Smith & Wesson 10mm Model 1076 Semiautomatic Pistol," produced 05 Sept., 1991, explicitly states an agency timeline of the M1076's use, beginning when the contract for 9,500 Model 1076 pistols was let in Jan., 1990, and then ended in Aug., 1991, after a litany of reliability and suitability problems ultimately caused The Bureau to lose faith in and discontinue use of the M1076.

1. Doesn't matter what some document says, I was there.

2. Show me the document.

And c. The FBI probably only issued the 1076 to NEW Agents in that time frame. But I actually doubt that based on the wording of your post. I was issued a Sig P228 in 1995 at New Agent Training. Later, I noticed a Firearms Instructor at the range with a 1076 in early 1996. I mentioned to him that I thought they were not carried anymore. He said the original ones were recalled and that the one he had was from a group that was run through the Performance Center after the fact and sent to the Bureau to try to change minds. He said he had two left to issue and asked if I wanted one. After I expressed skepticism about reliability he said this new group was a different animal and very reliable. I quickly got one issued and loved it. Carried it for a few more years and after a while the Bureau indicated they wanted them all turned in. So I turned mine in and was issued a Glock 23. There were a few Agents I know in the New York Office who held on to theirs for a couple more years before being forced to turn them in after early 1999. But I do not know the date the last Agent carried a 1076 but certainly after I turned mine in sometime in 1999.

'Later'

Just because he had a few left and you happened to get one does not mean that they were still filling a contract. As a matter of fact most of them intended for the FBI ended up in LEO Armory stores for the cheap in the mid to late 90s. The 1076 is a great gun and on par with the Sig you also where issued the Glock, not sure if that was your favorite one at all.

Contract vs use

I really have no idea when the contract for FBI 1076s started or ended. Until you mentioned "filling a contract", I did not think that was what we were talking about. Previous posters including you had used the term "use". 1076s in the FBI were in "use" by Agents on the street until at least 1999. The 1076 was my favorite in retrospect if that is a question you were asking.

1076 & 629 question

Looking for advice. I am an original owner of a 1076. I been reading a lot about these guns. I haven't used this pistol in 25 years, maybe has a 1,000 rounds thru it. Should I use this gun or preserve it because parts are hard to find. If something does break, can a gun smith fabricate a new part(s)?

Also looking for a nice leather holster for my 629. everything is about in the $150 range and up. Any suggestions on leather mfg guys/gals?

It would be my opinion that you've got a wonderful shooter and you should definitely shoot it for these reasons:

With a thousand rounds through it, it isn't NIB/mint, so putting another thousand or 4,000 rounds through it won't alter it's "value."

Next -- these are extremely well-built pistols that are quite unlikely to break.

Lastly... a great many of the parts are interchangeable with other models that S&W did make a lot of, so on the rare chance that something does fail, there's a better than average chance that you can source a part.

Welcome to the forum. Typically better to start a new thread for this question rather than bumping a very old discussion.

Great price, that's why when I ran across my 1076 for $550, no box, but in mint condition at my LGS I immediately jumped on it even though I was there picking up another gun off law-a-way. They don't pop up at that price very often and if it's an issued FBI gun you hit the lottery by the way.
