a friend of mine looked at what he thougt was a model 66 at first. turned out to be a 19-5 ,6 inch, p&r r, not a 66. gun was a satin nickle, not bright nickel. he'd never seen one like that before,i'd never heard of one either. a very nice gun, not junk. no sign of it being reworked. anyone else seen this kind before ??

I have not heard of a satin nickel 19 but in 1993 S&W did the 38-2 in satin nickel. This is what it looks like.

Either the gun your friend saw was a model 19-5 or pinned and recessed, most likely a 19-3; it can't be both.

That said, most likely it has been electroless nickel or hard chrome plated, either of which would strongly resemble a stainless gun. Images would help here.

The dash 5 revision was specifically for the new non recessed cylinder, the barrel set pin was deleted at the very end of the dash 4 revision.
Basicly all 19-4's are recessed but there are non pinned 19-4's but there are no pinned or recessed 19-5's.

As mentioned, cannot be a 19-5 P&R. Satin nickel was not a standard finish for the Model 19, so odds are it is an aftermarket refinish, either some sort of nickel or possibly hard chrome. Pictures would be nice to see.
