I need some input here. I'm looking to offload my Colt Detective Special, 95% shape, made in 1975. And trade for 6in .357. My two picks were a Colt MKIII/MKV Trooper 6in, or any S&W .357 mag with 6in half/qtr lug barrel.

I got an offer from someone in my state with Model 19-5 6in Nickel. Now I paid $500 for my Colt DS. Which I felt is fair for its great condition. And he was trying to sell S&W for $500 before we started talking trades. The pictures he sent me, it looks in really good shape, no flakes or chips in the nickel, I think I can see some brush scratch marks, but no gouging, and the grips are definitely not original, they appear to be hogue rubber finger grips.

Anyway, just curious if $500 seems normal or fair. In Michigan prices seem to be higher than most anywhere I've looked. I keep reading posts, that are only a year old, but other states, where people are saying "I wouldn't spend more that $350", etc etc.... But up here, that's what a used Taurus .357 sells for.

And all the info I'm reading on here is about 4in models in blue. I guess this must be the most popular variant of the model 19.

Anyway, looking forward to your input.....thanks

:) I say if it's a gun you want go for it. I think it would be pushing it for a M19 with a 6" barrel to be worth $500. Maybe $450 or so. I have a M66 six inch barrel that I have for sale for $475 with no luck. Don

Its definitely a gun I want. I don't know the DOB on it, not yet anyway. But from owner testimony, there is no cylinder ring. But I can see there is something there. He claims its been shot that little.

The nickel looks to be in fairly decent shape and should polish up nicely. Except for the next to last picture, has the screw been messed with.

Without a box and wood grips I would put the gun at $400-450.

You know I wondered the same thing. I looked at it more, and the picture before that shows better detail. I think its just the lighting in that second to last pic.

So bottom line, he might be $50 under what others would pay. But this is a trade after all. So maybe I'm losing out potentially $100 on my gun, cause I'm feel its worth $550 really. Its what I paid. But may not be what others would pay. So within a $100, whoever comes out on top $$$ wise, I'll be happy with this. Anyone have any tips on polishing nickel? Never done it but hear you can really mess it up if not done right.

Well I got the gun after all. I replaced the rubber Hogue grips with Factory originals. Took it to the range today, only played at 13yrds. I'm not a professional shoot by any means. But I'm happy with the results. I used a mix of 158gr .38spl, 110gr .357 and 180gr .357.

Your model 19 looks good, and if you enjoyed shooting it with the various magnum rounds, then you did just fine.Try some 148 grain wadcutters and I think you'll be happy with the results.
