Hi,
I recently found and bought in France this gorgeous S&W 19 no dash from 1957 (K316xxx). Standard hammer & trigger. In your mind, could these grips be the original one (a custom model) ?

Can't help with the stocks. They appear to be period correct, but whether they came on that particular revolver is probably impossible to say for sure. If a letter revealed it shipped with non-checkered Target stocks, then you could place a bet these are the originals. But smooth Targets were not standard.

The serial number is very helpful. That is very close to when model numbering started and is the lowest numbered K target gun I've recorded with a model number. It most likely was assembled late in the year 1957, and almost certainly did not ship from the factory until after the first of the year, 1958. If you ever letter this one, it would be great if you would publish the shipping information here on the Forum.

Enjoy your nice Combat Magnum.

Welcome to the forum!

Those look like recent, not late '50s, proof marks in the ejector rod shroud.

I believe that the presentation stocks are of later manufacture. I do not believe the "football" relief cut was in use in 1957. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

The presentation stocks are post 67........ to me they look like they've been shortened ????????....... I did it to a number of target stocks back in the 80s.... took off 3/8 off the bottom.

Those stocks are too new and have been modified heavily. The escutcheons were deeper in the late 1950's era, through the mid 1960s. The standard K-Frame stocks on the Combat Magnum had the football cut out on the left grip.

Congrats on running that gun down in France.

All the best,

Your Model 19 is a very nice example of the fairly early .357 Combat Magnum that most likely was shipped in 1958. The original stocks were probably diamond targets that were standard on this model.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
That is a nice early Model marked 19.

In the time when your gun was made the process of model marking was still new, therefore guns with close serial numbers are found both model marked and non model marked.
As an example I have one slightly higher in serial K-317946 but it is not model marked,
(BTW mine shipped May of 1958, S&W's were not shipped in serial order).

As for your stocks my bet is they were originally checkered and sanded smooth at some point as well as shortened in the heel.

Your stocks deeper SS escutcheons date them to likely being made pre 1968 , those appear to have been sanded down as well so they are flush.
(The later 70's era escutcheons are shallower and made of brass).

CIP proof marks are recent german one (Koln City Proof Marks). CIP Proof Marks (mandatory in Europe) are applied once the gun is imported in Europe by the importer country authority. So here, you can get modern proof marks on a 100 years old gun...

Pictures of the grips on my 1960 19 no dash. These are probably original.

K317190, a factory reblued Combat Magnum with no model number.
It had later rosewood smooth targets with the football cutout when I got it.
Thanks for posting yours.
