S&W 1917 - firing pin problems

I have a 1917 that I am attempting to get in working order. The firing pin after release always extends too far thru the firing pin hole.
Is this a function of the sear? The sear appears to be rather flat and worn on the bottom where it meets the (i believe) trigger lever confused.
