Stock Maintenance

What are people using to maintain the wood stocks on their classic S&W revolvers? I have a number of them and for some reason this never occurred to me before now. Any favorite products to clean and oil them?

Depends on age and current finish. Older stocks get BLO, newer stocks with a shiny finish get Rennwax or similar.

I take them of & spray Pledge furniture polish on 'em.
I use a soft toothbrush to scrub and wipe them off.

This is for normal, good condition stocks.
Others take more work.

Also, when cleaning the firearm, I put a light coating of RenWax on the grip frame and on the mating surfaces of the grips...works for wood and rubber. Never any rust issues with my firearms, even those in long-term storage.

If the stocks need a good cleaning, I start with some Murphy's Oil Soap wood cleaner and soft brush. I then dry and apply Renaissance Wax. I use RenWax on all my metal and wood.

Yes sir, boiled linseed oil. Most linseed oils are boiled/treated to speed their drying. Raw linseed oil can be found, but it dries REALLY slow, if at all.

I wipe them off with a rag. The rest is history

I clean them, clean & polish the hardware, dress the screw and put some Minwax Tung-Oil Finish oil on them & hand buff. I've never regretted it. I do the same with newer lacquer stocks, but use Minwax Finishing Wax instead of the Tung-Oil Finish.

Dirt is not patina.

+1, I also prefer Minwax brand Tung oil - to linseed oil, as linseed oil can get very dark. Tung oil penetrates, dries & protects without darkening.
I have restored gloss grips by stripping, fine sanding & building up Gloss Exterior Polyurethane - done on these used grips I refurbished - to replace sticky rubber ones.

I also use Renwax on all metal,wood and leather.Guns clean up even easier when having a good coat of Renwax just like a well waxed car.

I've had a couple of really nasty ones that I've cleaned with lemon oil or mineral spirits before wiping down with either Tung oil, Danish oil or Renisance wax, as appropriate.
