There are some members here who are very knowledgeable about M1917s and have given me great info on mine. However, without photos and a serial number they aren't going to be able to help. Condition and originality count as to value.

As to whether the M1917 is a "good" revolver, I would say yes. They are generally great shooters in a powerful caliber and historic revolvers. M1917s are still viable today as an everyday revolver.

Most likely, the experts will be along soon and they'll say, "yes" this is a good revolver, fired with or without the 3 or 6 cartridge moon clips. I have a couple of them (military) and they are enjoyable to shoot. If it is in "excellent" condition as you say, $750 is probably a fair price, but again, I'll defer to the experts. Your post is in the "Semi-automatic Pistols" category, and probably should be moved to the appropriate revolver section.

If it is all original and in excellent condition, it is probably worth that much. If it really is a commercial model and not military, that should be a premium. If I remember correctly, there were way more military 1917s than there were commercial models. Nowadays, I think any excellent condition original N frame S&W for less than $1000 is reasonable. Some would be in quite a rush to pick one up for $750.

This response is correct with everything I've seen. There's a military example for sale locally $1100 and it is in probably 85% condition.

A word of warning: The whole .45 ACP chambered revolver thing went right over my head for decades. A couple years ago a buddy offered me a nicely re-blued Brazilian model of 1917 and I figured I'd give it a go. That started a late in life interest in shooting .45ACP in a revolver, I no longer use moon clips but converted to .45Auto Rim. You can't really ask for a more fun to shoot caliber in a heavy framed revolver, shoot all day.
The price all depends on condition and issues like matching numbers. In this part of the country for that kind of money it should look pretty good and not have any mechanical conditions, all numbers should match. Pictures would help...
