i saw a S&W that I think was a 1917 comercial model that had checkered grips with gold colored S&W emblems . It looked to be a 6 inch bbl. it also had a lot of possible british proofs on the bbl. and frame. The blue was aproximatly 80% -85% it was a very nice looking revolver the cal was marked .45 auto rim on the bbl. and it had a lanyard ring .What do you guy's think this revolver can be ???? price was $550.00

I saw that same gun too on one of the on line auctions. It is a 455 HE, not a 1917

the cal was marked .45 auto rim on the bbl.
Sounds like someone converted it to .45 ACP / .45 Auto Rim and then stamped the barrel to so indicate.

Thank you guy's for the info you got my looking in the right derection I looked in the standard catalog of S&W it looks to be a .455 mark II HE 6 1/2" bbl. 2'nd model variation made for canada from the proof marks that has been converted to . 45 auto rim.I made a offer of $450.00 and put a deposit on it so I'll let you know what I do get it for. In the book it said that S&W did do some of the conversions is the any way to tell who did the conversion ???

Sureshotbob, See Lee Jarret's (handejector) comments under posting above for "Proof Marks" - He give a good explanation of factory .45 conversions ( if any). Ed.
