Hi everyone ,new here so this is my first post. I would like to get a nice .22 revolver to use at the indoor range at our sportsmans club ,that the wife and I just joined . I'am pretty set on a revolver , don't really want a semi auto . So what would you suggest ? PS yes we took the NRA basic pistol course ,so were ready to get our feet wet ,so to speak. Thanks ,gregC.

Welcome to the forum. You can't go wrong with any Model 17 or 18 in my opinion. There on here for sale and you should also go the the local gun shows where your at. Kyle

Agree with AV on a standard 4 or 6" K frame .22. Your other S & W alternatives would be the smaller J frames (models 34, 43, 63, 317) or the much heavier full-lug K frame 617.

Ditto the last post. Taught my wife to shoot with one of those. Dave

Depends on what size revolver you want to shoot. The small frame is called the J frame and Mod 34 (blue) or 63 (stainless) are good guns. The medium frame is called the K frame and Mod 17, 18 are good bets.

For ease of use I prefer the K frame and have the 4" Mod 18 that is a great shooter. For teaching kids and women with smaller hands I use the Mod 34 which is also a nice little shooter.

Welcome to the forum and have fun deciding what you and your wife want.

It may depend on what size your wife prefers. The Mod 17 is a great gun, it is a K Frame and reasonable sized and weight. The J Frame mod 63 is somewhat smaller and lighter. If you wife has no problems with a little larger gun the 17 is hard to beat. If she has problems with the size and weight a 4" 63 can be just as accurate.

Now, be prepared for the next step, you will each want your own gun so you don't have to share. It gets worse, you will then want a 38, then a 357, then maybe a 44. Then you will want to venture over to the semi auto's with a 1911. If competition calls you a Mod 41 will be in your future.

Don't despair, it is great fun, definitely a family sport and teaches everyone responsibility and fair play. You will meet lots of other great people and share your sport.

I have just purchased my first 22 smith (17-6) and they are a good amount of money but worth it. I am goin to take it to the range for the first time tonight. And since this tread does not have any pics yet I thought this would help.

.22 revolver

Thanks to all for info I think a j frame would suit her fine . I 'll try looking at the S&W site to get alook at some . Is there any thing on this site for .22 hand guns only? Thanks agian gregC.

First off, welcome to the forum and the world of S&W's.

My first .22 revolver was a pre model 17. Basically a K frame 6" barrel .22 revolver manufactured before 1957 when the federal government required S&W to begin model marking their guns.

I shot that gun for years in my gun clubs annual all around and won the pistol portion 3 years running. They are great fun to shoot and are extremely accurate.

I would suggest checking your local gun shops or pawn shops as well as online sites like Gun Broker.com, Auction Arms.com and GunsAmerica.com.

These sites will give you a good sampling of whats out there and the going prices. You will have to determine what you want to spend and whether you want an older gun or one of the more modern versions.

As others have stated, then you will probably "need" a .38 or a .357 and then a .44 magnum and then maybe a model 41 (.22 semi automatic) or a 39 (9mm) or 59 (9mm) or a 1911 (45 ACP).:D

Keep checking back so we can keep tabs on your S&W addiction.;)

I just thought I would keep the K-22 thread going. I haven't been able to find much talk about the model 18 on this forum.

I really like my Model 18 K-22 Combat Masterpiece. It has the 4" barrel and is a tack driver. My wife is a vey good shot with it, as well.

Have a 617 6" and an 18-4 4"

Both are great...I love stainless though, so the 617 will stay with me long time
