What type of 22LR revolver is the closest match to a S&W Model 66-2 .357 revolver. I'd like to practice with a 22LR vs..38/.357.
Any recommendations?

If you have a 6" model 66, a .22 LR model 17 of the same length is almost an exact understudy. A 4" 66 is close to a model 18 but the latter has a tapered barrel and will be slightly muzzle light in comparison. There is no 2.5" K frame .22. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, was not going to mention that one due to the near-impossibility of seeing one, except here on the Forum of course :).

Mine is a 4"... I'll have to check out the Model 18... thanks.

I know there are 4 inch Model 17's out there without the full lug. The dash escapes me, -5 maybe. I passed on one at a gun show last winter. They are out there along with the Model 18's. Good luck finding the .22LR ammo. Sorry, just felt the need to toss that in there.

Correct, there are 4" 17-5 and 6 versions with a heavy barrel. Probably a little harder to find than a model 18 but another alternative.

If you look really, really hard you might find one of these to match the 'feel' of your Model 66.
Or you could do like I did and keep begging for one 'til you wear someone down that has one.:D

enjoy,

This is beautiful revolver. It may be obvious, but what is the model?

Not to step on bdGreen's post, but I'm thinking those are 617 no-dash (both 4 & 6") and are part of a limited run for Ashland.
Prolly early 1990's ('91/'92) time frame. They are hard to find for sale and typically aren't cheap if you do. Hence, why murphydog prolly didn't mention them in his initial post.

The Model 18 is the closest. It is actually a twin of the Model 15, but close enough. LE agencies used the Model 18 as an understudy for whatever K frame was standard at the agency.

The 617 should be more muzzle heavy and I believe they are or were available in 4" length.

The model 18 ramp front sight matches the model 66, but being a target revolver, the longer model 17 will have a partridge post front. I think the 617s have the post as well.

Alas, the 17s far outnumber the 18s, so the latter can be hard to find. I don't know if they command higher prices.

Scroll down in this thread for a look at a 4" 17-6:
