Thank you Dave! I asked for more info on the serial number. Apparently, this is the only pic he has since the gun is stored with his uncle at some distance from where he lives. At least I can tell him what the model is!

It is a K22 Masterpiece.

Most probably not a Model 17.

A fourth screw is visible, but, don't know if it is a five screw gun.

In that condition and without knowing if it's 4 or 5 screw I would think in today's market it is a $600.00 -$700.00 gun.

Need to see more of it.

If its a 5 screw all matching piece..850 to 950 in todays market. If no surprises on the other side and exc overall orig finish..poss worth..in my view..up to 950 to1050..
About 6-7 months ago I paid 950 for an exc all matching post war 47-48 pre model # k22
without a box..Thru a kind member I now have a correct gold box for it..
IMHO..YOMV..
Randy..

The stocks look like PC's so I doubt they match the s/n but you never know with S&W. I just bought a five screw off of a forum member. Stocks don't match, no box, or tools. Paid $690 and quite happy. I will have it in my hands next Tuesday. Can't wait.

It shipped 4/1957.

I'm thinking Model 17

The ejector rod looks more like Model 17 than a post war K 22 Masterpiece.

My K22 Masterpiece is 1947 shipment per LOA, s/n 905 with matching numbers all around, plus numbered to the gun diamond grips. Notice the ejector rod and knob.

My Model 17-3 is a 1971 shipment and numbers match.

The OP's gun has diamond grips so IF original then obviously pre 1968, but Model numbers started in 1957/58.

A photo of yoke with cylinder swung out and of the butt will settle the matter.

While we wait for the serial number, I'll throw in my two pennies worth:
1. PC stocks, so they are not original, even though they might be period correct.
2. I'm pretty sure I can see the groove on the extractor rod that indicates a left hand threaded rod. That, together with the presence of the fourth screw, would indicate a Model 17-1 from 1959 or 1960. That is a difficult gun to find. I hope that turns out to be what it is.

Admittedly, I'm not positive about the extractor rod. I blew up the pic but it gets fuzzy when you do that.

Thanks for all the great responses guys! I will see if he can get the serial number and post it here if he does.

We need the following to REALLY advise you well:

1. Serial number on the butt
2. Open the cylinder and look inside on the crane forward of the cylinder and supporting the barrel itself. If it is post 1957 there will be a Model Number, ie "MOD 17-1" or something similar.
3. There should be a serial number on the inside of the wood grip panels. If the serial number matches the gun they are original to the gun. As others have pointed out this is unlikely as they are "Plain Clothes" grips that rarely shipped on the 22s.
