Neither my 24-3 nor my 624 Lew Horton will accept magnums.
There was a recall on 624's but not 24's for supposedly inferior metal in the cylinders but some say the real reason was cylinders bored too deep so they'd accept magnums. Mother ship liability issues etc.
More knowledgeable folks should be along shortly but whatever else you do, DON' T shoot magnums in your 24.

Are the rounds you tried factory or reloads? If factory what brand? Can you measure the case length?

This is ABSOLUTELY my favorite Handgun/Revolver An M24 .44Special stoked with Underwood .44Magnum with 255gr Hard Cast Keith's...
And here is the "Tell-Tale-Heart" of how they WILL-Fit, Clear Cylinder Rotation... and Fire from an M24... Have I done this? Why HELL-NO, but it can be done because the Chamber Throats will allow it. Here is the PRoof!

The metallurgy is the Exact same as on the .44Magnum's Cylinder wise... They, the Cylinders were just chambered too deep. Smith gave the metallurgy BS/Problem as a reason to cover their AZZ's from all I've been told, read, and experienced! I have a model 24 Lew Horton Special that will accept Both Specials and Mags "Very Easily" and she'll shoot the Hottest Specials' and most certainly HAS... with No-Problem at all. Post, and Pics below...
Has anyone that has an extra deep chambered 24-3 checked the depth of the chamber to where it starts to taper into the throat? It seems conceivable that a heavily crimped .44 magnum round could full seat in a chamber that's not long enough for the brass to "uncrimp" when fired, i.e a chamber that's longer than normal for .44 Spl. but shorter than normal for .44 magnum.
If the revolver WAS accidentally chambered in .44M at the factory, then it doesn't seem a big deal- aside from rather unpleasant recoil. (I admit it, I'm a wimp. I save full powered .44 mag rounds for the heavyweight .44s....)
BTW, all of my 24-3s won't seat a .44M, so I can't do a measurement.

All of the Hornaday LeveRevolution ammo I have measured have shorter cases to compensate for the longer bullets!! I hate it and throw all the Hornaday brass away and will not reload it! Nor buy it. I actually found out by accident when a shooter in Texas gave me some of his brass and it did
not seat bullets the same as my other .357 brass.
