S&W 28-2 questions

I’m looking at a S&W 28-2 on a local forum and am trying to determine if it’s factory nickel or if it’s been plated. The serial number puts it as a late ‘61 or early ’62 production. My concern is the grip frame being plated on the bottom where the serial number is but not on the sides, and the S&W logo on the frame looking shallow.

What do y’all think?

It's not an original nickel but it has a rearward serial number so would be a great candidate for a Farrant style frame cut.

Being an aftermarket plating job, it’s not worth pistol he wants me to trade for it. I’m going to pass.

It's worth noting, in your next searches for nice S&W's, a factory nickel finish will have a blued extractor star and color case-hardened hammer and trigger. The breech end of the cylinder will also be stamped with an N along the outer edge between two charge holes, as will the left side of the butt frame under the stocks. What was the asking price for the one you found? Factory nickel guns bring a premium over blued models.

That’s why I asked him to pull the stocks off for a picture. I was looking for the N stamp.

He wants 800 cash or my 6” 686 Power Port. It is was a factory nickel gum, I would do it. I’m not going to trade for an aftermarket plated one though.

Plated rear sight, trigger, and hammer plus the large gap between the side plate and frame just scream aftermarket plating and not a particularly good job either.

It may only be the lighting in the pics, but the hammer looks nickeled also......Ben

Safe to assume any nickel Highway Patrolman we find is not original. Just weren't enough of them made.
