Hello,
I am trying to find out some information on a pistol that my father had as a very young man. It is in .32 Long ctg. The serial number stamping on the first digit is so heavily stamped I can't be sure if it is a "3" or a "5". The number is 395901 or 595901. Here is a couple of pictures.

The serial number should also be written on the face of the cylinder, under the barrel when the cylinder is opened, and possibly on the back side of the right grip.

It appears to be a .32 Regulation Police model. If so, the serial number would be on the front grip strap, i.e., the part behind the trigger guard. I can't give an exact dating, but almost certainly from the 1920s. I'd say no later than 1927. The proper ammunition is called .32 S&W Long. It is available. A very nice RP.

"Three" is correct. The features of the revolver date it to the 1920s. That model is called the .32 Regulation Police. Guns in the 395000 to 400000 serial number range for this model were available for shipping in 1927, though you can never tell exactly when a gun was shipped without checking the factory records. If you think 1927-28, you'll be close enough.

Serial numbers above 534600 for this model shipped after WWII.

EDITED: I see DWalt responded while I was typing. At least you got pretty much the same info twice! :D

Hello,
It is stamped there but it is stamped so hard it is difficult to tell if it is a 3 or a 5. The twenties sounds right, my grandfather owned a hardware store in upstate NY and my dad was born in 1917. He was given a .22 at age six and by the time he was sixteen he received a NIB Colt SAA Gen1 .45LC 7.5" "Rubber Blue" which I have also.
