I have a S&W 38/40 revolver. It was my father's. I can't find out much about this model. There is a number on bottom of butt. Also trying to ammunition.

Is the revolver a top break or does it have swing out cylinder? We need at least a partial SN to identify the gun. Pics would be better yet. FYI 38-40 is also known as 38 Winchester or 38 WCF.

Could you please post a photo or two? We'd love to see it.

A family story has a Smith & Wesson .38-40 of some sort in existence among my dad's first cousins until the late 1940s/early 1950s. Some empty Rem-UMC .38-40 cases were in my dad's "junk drawer" when I was a kid. I asked about them and he said it was "Uncle Ross's" Smith & Wesson revolver and the cases were a result of taking it out and firing it some at a family gathering. He remembered it at the time as being a top-break and double-action. Now he can't recall enough to describe it nor does he know what became of it.

I would love to have a .38-40 Smith & Wesson revolver of some sort.

To Jim at Gorings S&W

It is a swing out and number on butt is 133007. I'll take pictures tonight.

Unless it is a special order, a caliber conversion or a non-S & W, the serial number is not consistent with a .38-40. Is there an S in front of the SN?
