ED, the gun looks OK to me but it does have a factory rework star on the butt. If you pull the stocks, there should be a date coded on the frame. Something like 6 45, which would stand for June 1945. No telling what she went back for, could be finish or could be parts. Nice looking old S&W. I'm not familiar with a .38 HE 5th model, someone else will have to chime in.

Hey Sax

Sax and all who responded to my earlier post about the .38 S&W Special CTG, this is the exact revolver. Mr Hicks has posted some fine photos for your inspection. Thanks all.

There isn't any such thing as a 5th Model K frame. It's a .38 Hand Ejector Model of 1905 fourth change. Production would have been late pre-WW2 (probably 1939-1940 timeframe).
Grooved grip straps became standard on K target frames in 1923.

You ask if it's standard or if it's special? It's a standard target model. Target models are much less common than the service version Military & Police model, but aren't quite in the 'rare' catagory. They are worth more than their fixed sight conterparts, though.
Beautiful gun, by the way! I have two early target .38s. A 1905 made in 1905 and a 1905-first change made around 1910.

Sam;

As discussed earlier, this is a prewar M & P Target 4th change. I don't believe there is a 5th change, unless the postwar short action was called this. Its serial number puts its production in the early 1930s. Agree about the star marking from the previous poster, but I doubt the reason is findable even from the factory records. Nice gun!

Appears to be a K38 Target 1st Model. (or maybe that's 1st Model Target) I want to say Outdoorsman but that may pertain to the K22 1st Model. If either of you can get it for $600, judging by what I can see it's not unreasonably priced.

Ed and Sam,

That's a good looking gun. As Jim pointed out, it is refinished, and that will hold down its value to a collector. But it would make a very good looking shooter, and I wouldn't hesitate to give this one lots of range time and subsequent good care. It looks pretty good now and there's no reason for it not to continue to look that good in years to come, even with regular use.

My 1905 Fourth Change Target that I mentioned in the other thread has not been refinished but does not look that good. I just put a humpback hammer on mine this afternoon. In order not to go sideways to a different gun on this thread, I will start yet another one about M&P Target models.
