I have a 5 screw S & W early hand ejector 38 special. Ser # 217943. Would this be considered an " N frame target" model or simply a hand ejector target model? Ive looked thru the Std S & W catalog and this has me stumped

Looks to me like a Pre-Model 14 or K-38 Target Masterpiece that has been cut to accommodate Fuzzy Farrant stocks, and possibly had the hammer replaced.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum,
The target hammer was an option during that time period and it more than likely came with the gun from the factory. The "trigger shoe" is non factory and was a popular add on. As others have identified it's a pre model 14 .38 Target Masterpiece from 1954. Here is a pic of mine, also from 1954 with target hammer serial# K220XXX. These revolvers are a pleasure to shoot and highly accurate.
