I have a chance to purchase a complete S&W 639 "upper," including the slide, barrel, recoil spring and barrel bushing for $225 It appears "like new." Will it fit an S&W 39-2 frame?

639 upper is compatible with 539, 439, and in my case it fit a 915 and 6906..
Does NOT WORK with 39 or 39-2.

How does the 39-2 frame get the 669 slide's firing pin safety out of the way?

It dosen't, the 39-2 does not have the actuating lever as the firing pin safety was introduced with the 2nd gen pistols.

That feature will need to be removed from the 2nd gen slide by removing the rear sight to de-install the spring and plunger that engages the firing pin.

I have a slide from a 559 with the new style adjustable rear sight on my 39-2, and that's what I did... works fine.

Because you can get a complete upper half on ebay for $200 and often one has a no dash 39 and dont want to shoot it because the extractor is hard to replace.

I did the slide swap mainly for improved sight visibility for my aging eyes... figured it was a better alternative than putting red dot optics of such a classic pistol.

Tried the fully adjustable factory "lollipop" sight at first and it was not much improvement. With the second gen slide, I was able to install a red insert in the front sight blade for contrast.

This way, I still have an unaltered original slide to swap back on when I want to restore the pistol back to original configuration when the time comes to sell it (one of these days).
