I scored a batch of three Model 41's from my shooting mentor's estate, plus one extra standard length barrel. Only one is drilled and tapped. See photos. (Left or front for the D&T in both pictures.)

The D&T has a square section atop the slide ~ 1/4" wide - the hole centers on my D&T slide are 3.75" It appears to be of S&W manufacture.

I've just tried a Weaver 62 base, and the holes don't don't line up, nor does it fit the rail very well. It fits nicely on the other slides, but they are not tapped!

Further, the guys at LSP-vt say they've never seen a slide like this one.

I hate to drill one of the other slides, as I understand they are bringing a premium untouched ( bought one, a long slide, to shoot - the other two are investments.) The SNs on all of these indicate central 1970s manufacture.

I suppose I could get a smith to modify some other chunk of stock to fit it, but, sheesh...

I also found a custom base in his stuff that will fit the long slide if D&T'd, but not the exising std. length D&T in the photo??? What was he thinking putting optics on a long slide?

HALP!

Unless I am mistaken, the bbl on the left is an EFS (extended front sight) barrel. The hex screws are used to lock the front sight into position either as shown or slid out (see mark on the slide piece for indexing. Note these are BARRELS - NOT SLIDES. The slide is the part between the bbl and frame that moves to eject and reload the next round. DO NOT mess with this bbl except to shoot open open sites - this is a fairly rare bbl and should remain in the found condition.

EFS

Tom is correct, that is an EFS barrel, most likely shipped that way,
which is a great gun to own.
Shoot it as it is, and you can always get a barrel with the D&T already there.
That EFS front sight is Very rare and hard to replace should you damage it
or lose it. Good Score, Jim

I answered your question in this thread.

You have an EFS Model 41. Extendable Front Sight. You can loosen those screws and extend the front sight further out. The barrel can't be drilled and tapped because the screws would go into the sliding front sight. Nor should you damage that barrel, it's rare and in demand.
The best bet would be to try another barrel or mount a red dot in place of the rear sight.

You are absolutely right, sir. My notices were going to spam for the last couple of weeks, and I also had password issues. I didn't think the thread you mentioned got posted, and didn't see a notice of response, then I forgot about it until yesterday when I posted again. Duh.me. Sorry.

Thanks to the rest for your information.

As stated the left barrel is an EFS. The barrel on the right appears to have been modified with a fixed extended front sight.

That EFS barrel only recently sold on Ebay for $570 plus shipping.

As far as optic sight barrels go, I purchased a Clark barrel and left my untapped 7" barrel alone. That Clark barrel is nice! It will shoot into 1/2" at 50 yards from sandbags with CCI SV.
